Unit 1: Geography and American Indians
During this unit, students will study the geography of the United States and indigenous societies in the Western hemisphere. They will explore how the first people arrived in America and how they adapted to their environment. Students will study and compare characteristics of Native American cultures in various regions of the United States.
Unit 2: Exploration and Early Settlements
During this unit, students will study how and why Europeans explored new regions. Students will discover the challenges faced and how navigational tools affected the journey. They will describe how cultural differences and competition for land led to conflicts among different groups of people in the Americas.
Unit 3: Colonial America
During this unit, students will study how settlements became unique colonies based on European ideals and geography. Students will study how the environment impacted the growth and cultural development of New England, Middle, and Southern colonies. They will focus on how trade and slavery impacted various cultural groups living in America.
Unit 4: The Declaration of Independence
During this unit, students will study the events and conflicts that led to the American Revolution. They will investigate different points of view of groups of colonists and England. Students will study the main principles of the Declaration of Independence. Students will determine why the Declaration of Independence is an important document.
Unit 5: American Revolution and the Constitution
During this unit, students will study key events and major battles of the Revolutionary War. They will evaluate turning point events to understand how the colonists defeated the British. Students will study the impact of the Treaty of Paris on various groups involved in the war.
