Decoding Strategies

Decoding Strategies help readers read and figure out difficult words. We focus on these strategies during guided reading and shared reading. As we learn these strategies in class, we add them to our FACE of a Reader board for students to refer to as they read independently.

*Cross Checking - Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?

*Use the Picture - Do the words and the picture match?

*Use Beginning and Ending Sounds - Good readers use these sounds to figure out a word that may fit. (Crash through the word)

*Blend Sounds, Stretch Sounds, and Reread

*Look for a Chunk (ch, sh, th, er, ing, wh) - Watch for familiar word patterns

*Play hide & seek with the word - Find a word within a word

*Skip the Word and Come Back - Read on to the end of the sentence or passage and use context clues to decode the unknown word.

Reading Buddies

When your children are reading new material and can not read independently, encourage them to think of our reading buddies. Our reading buddies remind us of good reading strategies.
