English Language Learners Fast Track to S.T.E.P. Academy

An acronym for Stand up, Take action, Expect great things and Put in the work, HACC’s S.T.E.P. Academy and Language Institute are partnering to help Central PA’s resilient immigrants and refugees push through the pandemic toward their college and career goals. Health and labor market trends show that COVID-19 has exacerbated immigrant health and economic disparities with non-native speakers of English often working in “essential positions” in lower seniority roles with a lack of access to health care and a higher rate of comorbidities. Thanks to generous HACC Foundation funding, nearly twenty graduates of the English Language Learner with Digital Literacy Fast Track Program (an advanced-level, English as a second language course for un/underemployed, internationally-educated professionals) are transitioning into the S.T.E.P. Academy to receive intensive and culturally sensitive job-readiness, college and career coaching, nationally recognized credentials such as CPR/First Aid, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) plus three HACC credits. These highly skilled and motivated, yet vulnerable members of our community deserve equal access to education and employment, and HACC is here to help!

Introduction to Dentistry Course Extremely Popular

Not one, not two, but THREE full sections of the Introduction to Dentistry course are being held in this fall term!!! That’s 60 students in total!

The 15-hour, online course is offered through Workforce Development’s Healthcare Education Department and taught by Joan Ellison, RDH, BS, MS. The course provides basic information about the practice of dentistry and dental hygiene for students with no prior experience in a dental office. Basic terminology, procedures and principles related to dental practice are presented for students who are interested in pursuing a career in dental hygiene, and with successful completion of the course will give dental hygiene students two points toward the selective admissions process. The cost of the course is $199.

Augmented and Virtual Reality in the Modern Classroom

As a real example of cross-discipline collaboration, workforce development and credit faculty members Nicholas Landis and Robert Schanke, under the guidance of Doreen Fisher-Bammer, have joined with instructional designer Josh Eckenrode to explore the use of augmented and virtual reality in the modern classroom.

The team has successfully built a learning module based on teaching students the basics of using a drill press using a combination of 360 video, interactive lessons, and traditional text. In addition to the interactive lessons, the team has developed a virtual drill press. Using augmented reality, students can place a virtual drill press in their living room, or wherever they are, to practice basic skills when they cannot physically use one. Josh, Nick, Doreen, and Rob will be presenting their work at the 2020 OCL Accelerate this fall, with their presentation "'No Drill Press Required: Simulation and Gamification of Precision Machining Labs using Augmented and Virtual Reality." This initiative was generously funded by the HACC Foundation.
