Fast Track Orientation and Advising Sessions

In an effort to help students move from admission to registration more smoothly, several Student Affairs units have combined forces to create Fast Track Orientation and Advising Sessions. Staff from the orientation team, student success initiatives unit, advising, and the one-stop welcome center are working together to move students through a streamlined orientation segment and help them get registered for classes, all in approximately 90 minutes.

The Fast Track Orientation and Advising sessions show a true collaboration between Student Affairs offices and embody the One College model. We look forward to continuing these types of team efforts for future registration cycles! #HACCProud

New Student Orientation

After students complete their admissions process, they will be sent an email with a date for an orientation and advising session, which will be held remotely via Zoom.

New Student Orientation will assist students with:

  • Completing the enrollment process

  • Making a smooth transition to college

  • Engaging with available HACC resources

  • Finding the why, or the reason they chose to attend college

  • Discover similarities and differences among their fellow HACC students

Working Together As One-College

The Integrated Marketing Communications Department and the Student Progression Department have formed a new partnership to better meet the needs of our current and future students. Using their combined expertise, these departments are sending targeted communications to students to aid them in their educational journey. Examples of these communications include a phone blast to virtual students regarding attendance and an email to all current students highlighting the mental health resources that are available to them. Also, postcards were mailed to our military/veteran, career, and transfer students regarding the spring semester priority registration dates.

This is just one example of many that shows how the reorganization to the One-College model is benefitting both the students and the institution.

New from Career Services

Career Service Educators are fundamental to students’ successful completion of their academic goals. As we deliver a comprehensive range of career development services and resources intended to support students’ attainment of educational and career, we recognize that each team member will need to be flexible in serving our students as we help them grow professionally.

In Career Services, we are currently focusing on four main initiatives this fall semester.

First, all students should be introduced early on to Career Services. Within career services, we have conducted early outreach through our Navigate tool and have alerted each brand-new fall 2020 student (over 4,400) to the services available to them within Career Services. This has resulted in an increase of students requesting career services assistance.

Second, we are committed to partnering with our faculty and developing career programming for their students. We have partnered with faculty in both credit programs and within Workforce Development. Thus far, in these first two months of the fall semester, we have conducted over two dozen classroom presentations and dozens more are on the schedule in the months to come. In addition, we are currently exploring additional ways for career services to be embedded in classes that are offered virtually.

Third, we have conducted targeted outreach with the Navigate tool to 481 students enrolled in the General Studies curriculum to help ensure that these students have a goal/direction determined. We are very early on in our outreach, but thus far we have seen a response rate of 5-6% of the students requesting follow-up services.

Fourth, we are working hard to engage our students by offering creative career programming outside of classroom partnerships. This has included several virtual career fairs and business tours that are industry-specific, as well as offering a “career boot camp” to prepare students for these events by highlighting topics on resume writing, preparing effective LinkedIn page, understanding personal brand and how to market skills, and introducing students to interviewing via Zoom. We even have programming targeted to those students who remain undecided.

Our Career Services team both in Career Education and Employer Partnership is committed to preparing students for opportunities beyond HACC and cultivating internship and employment opportunities for our students. If you would like to learn more about all the exciting things happening in Career Services or on how you can partner with us, please reach out at careerservices@hacc.edu.
