NEW Virtual Learning Workforce Development Offerings

HACC’s Workforce Development division recently created a new course offering that allows students the opportunity to experience CDL Class A or B from the comforts of their home. Instead of having to come to campus for 200 in-person hours, potential students now have the opportunity to enroll in a virtual theory class. The virtual class is designed to take approximately 40 hours of time. When a student completes the course and passes a written exam with an 80% or higher, they can proceed directly to the behind-the-wheel portion of training of only 160 hours.

Moving a portion of the training to a virtual setting has allowed for a number of benefits to the community, including the ability to “test out” at a lower rate if CDL is a career path someone may want to participate in. The course consists of six modules: basic operations, safe operating procedures, advanced operating procedures, vehicle systems and reporting malfunctions, and non-driving activities.

In light of the COVID19 health crisis, the CDL department continues to invest in developing new virtual courses and continuing education to help support the trucking industry.

HACC’s Public Safety Center was proud to also partner with Virtual Learning to develop two new programs. Prospective students for the police academy can now prepare for and apply to the police academy by enrolling in the new program. This new program walks prospective cadets through the application and testing process, prior to admission to the police academy. This new program will ensure consistency and transparency for prospective cadets.

Do you own a handgun or are considering purchasing one? A basic handgun course can now be completed online. This newly developed online course will provide the basics of handguns and provide instruction on the laws surrounding handguns and the safe handling and use of a handgun. This course is necessary for those interested in taking the in-person component provided on the 30,000 square foot indoor firing range at the Senator Piccola Law Enforcement Complex.

Emotional Intelligence Presentations

Hello everyone! Are you ready? The Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division (WFD) at HACC has a variety of nimble and ready-for-action departments that serve our students and the larger community. One of our WFD departments, Corporate and Business Services, is starting a 4-week presentation on Emotional Intelligence (also known as Emotional Quotient – EQ) to help you grow your understanding and knowledge! Each Wednesday through 5/13, we will share highlights on how you can practice your skill in that EQ area. At HACC’s Corporate and Business Services department, we teach courses on the EQ topic based on the theory and information presented by Daniel Goleman. He identifies how EQ develops over the course of our life journey and, while we can all build our skill set to learn and understand EQ, to really kick things into high gear takes time, intentional actions and behaviors, and some hard work. EQ is comprised of four core areas: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Watch this short video for additional understanding of how Krista Beljan, our Education Specialist at HACC’s Corporate and Business Services department, practices self-awareness. Let’s get started! #HACCYeah!

Certified Recovery Specialist Program Sees Increased Enrollment!

In its second year, HACC’s Certified Recovery Specialist (CRS) program is gaining popularity with those seeking the CRS credential. Enrollments have increased by over 50 percent in our most recent class. The 54-hour program, which is approved by the Pennsylvania Certification Board, is for individuals who have at least 18 months of personal lived recovery experience and seek to become certified recovery specialists. A CRS assists others in their recovery from various forms of substance addictions, and jobs are available in a variety of human services-related organizations. Available scholarships help students offset tuition costs, making it possible for participation in the CRS program. The nine-week, evening program is currently held three to four times each year at HACC’s Midtown 1 Center in Midtown Harrisburg.

English as a Second Language Offered through Workforce Development

The WFD Corporate and Business Services Department is #HACCproud of the nearly 70 English as a Second Language (ESL) learners and their instructors, Deborah Blakeslee and Becca Sullivan, for being so hard working and flexible as they finished their 10 week ESL class that changed to remote instruction half way through the course. Summer Workforce Development ESL classes are scheduled to begin remotely on June 8th.
