A key first step in reaching audiences is understanding them – their motivators, barriers and influencers.
This was the goal of the collegewide HACC Voices workgroups. Colleagues from every campus and Virtual Learning and nearly every division participated on our collegewide workgroups to:
To our workgroup members, thank you!
Through literature review, focus groups, surveys and interviews, the workgroups crafted HACC Voices Audience Profile Sheets for some of the College’s target audiences.
The Office of College Advancement has been using these sheets in our program marketing and persona recruitment campaigns. So how can you use them?
If your target audience is represented in one of these fact sheets, please take some time to review the fact sheet before you communicate with your target audience. It will help you to better understand them and reach a common ground. For example:
The final sheets have been posted in the “Understanding YOUR Audience” section in the OCA channel on myHACC. Stay tuned for information about training later this calendar year!
As the College encourages registration among current and future students for the summer and fall 2020 semesters, the Office of College Advancement (OCA) is excited to continue its efforts with marketing by target audience and meeting future students where they are in their educational journey (see OCA August 2019 newsletter.)
Using our three personas, we launched this new approach in fall 2019, and it has exceeded our expectations. We are reaching and connecting with more future students based on their demographics and needs, while beating national advertising averages in the educational industry.
For example, the campaigns use different types of digital advertising to reach our three target audiences and guide them to a landing page that includes information relevant to them. (Please visit our 2018-19 marketing assessment for definitions for the terms below). During the registration phase of the winter/spring 2020 future student campaign, our assessment showed:
o Nontraditional student (Tanishia)
Additionally, when we compared the impressions on our digital advertising for winter/spring registration between 2019 and 2020, there was an increase of 550% in impressions. We went from 2,233,179 impressions to 14,544,766 impressions.
Finally, as we continue to market to future students, we are also establishing YouTube playlists for each persona, including:
Each playlist will include the 30-second commercials, helpful first-hand tips from students, student stories and more.
People choose HACC for many reasons: its affordability, location, class offerings, flexibility and more. TK Ly, a nursing student, chose HACC after researching affordable schools that met the pre-requisites for graduate school. Once TK came to HACC and learned about the curriculum, they decided to shift their focus to nursing to “take advantage of the top-rated area program and faculty to jump-start my medical career.”
HACC has impacted TK’s life by providing resources for support academically and personally. They said, “it [HACC] has given a sense of clarity and confidence with regard to my career and goals,” while teaching them to be bold, but realistic, in their endeavors.
TK said, “I have experienced a lot of loss that got me to where I am today. I chalk it all up to one learning experience, and persevering through it all has made me a stronger student, a stronger father to my two young children...a stronger individual who isn’t afraid. I am excited about the future at age 40. I feel like life has just begun.”
TK plans to graduate from HACC in 2021, then earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing and ultimately a doctorate in nursing anesthesia.

Valerie Green, a HACC general studies student with dyslexia, said she was always known as the “girl who could not read,” leading to low confidence and the belief that she was “not that smart.”
Through her high school, Valerie took many trips to HACC and was always astounded by “how wonderful of a community college it is.” She wants everyone who is considering college to “give our school a try” because of the “warm, kind staff, and students… and everything is more personable.”
HACC’s online programs have allowed Valerie to work a full-time job while making school worthwhile. She said, “I am now able to take classes on my own time, study whatever time of the day, and work! I am so forever grateful to be a HACC Hawk.”
Relationships with her fellow students have helped Valerie gain more confidence. Since coming to HACC, she said, “I have been all around more positive, and excited about school… I feel excited where the future will lead me, and with the help of wonderful teachers and peers I know I will achieve my dreams!”
After graduating from HACC, Valerie plans to enroll in an occupational therapy program to work with children with special needs – this time, as their therapist.
