The President’s Award recognizes members of the HACC (the “College”) community whose contributions to the College represent exceptional performance above and beyond expectations. This meritorious award is presented to select colleagues based upon their successful fulfillment of one or more of the award criteria. Nomination criteria includes:
Advancement of Academic Excellence
Fostering Student Success
Strengthening Institutional Sustainability
Instilling Inclusivity
This year’s award recipients are representative of each of our constituency groups and exemplifies the rich diversity of the College. The recipients are listed below.
Beth Evitts, formerly the Executive Director, Library, received two nominations for consideration. The nominations were submitted by Borany Kanal-Scott and a group of colleagues (led by Kim McGovern) in recognition of the amazing value Beth places on student success and the Library’s important role in that success. Beth was also recognized for her service-oriented leadership style, which earned her the trust and respect of her colleagues and students alike. She has demonstrated her ability to provide vision, and drive progress in times of great change by establishing a strong organizational bond, bolstering confidence among direct reports and colleagues alike. Her visionary leadership was most recently illustrated in the College reorganization, and the directing of the Library’s response to the campus closures due to COVID-19. In this response, Beth helped to deploy critically needed technology to support the pivot to remote learning in a quick and efficient manner.
Although Beth recently retired from the College, I was able to connect with her to thank her for her service to the College, congratulate her on receiving the award, and wish her well in the next chapter of her life.
Monica Filburn, department chair, nursing was nominated by Rick Albright for her role in leading the Nursing Department during a period of unprecedented leadership change. Monica stepped in as the department chair after Ron Rebuck, former chair and beloved member of the Nursing department, became ill. All of this occurred as the department was completing its self-study and preparing for a re-accreditation site visit from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. Despite these extraordinary challenges, Monica demonstrated the best qualities of leadership, kept her team together, ensured that the program was successfully re-accredited, and worked tirelessly to strengthen the program academically. Her goal was to increase first-time pass rates on NCLEX exams for both the Associate’s (RN) and PN programs, and prepare students for the Next Generation NCLEX.
Monica, we thank you for the care and support that you and your team provided to our students and for your efforts in advancing academic excellence.
Christy Helm, Administrative Office Specialist, was nominated by Leslie Boon and Rick Albright for her efforts in advancing academic excellence. Christy’s nomination recognized the process she developed of onboarding adjunct faculty, which has become the standard in preparing new faculty to teach at HACC’s Harrisburg Campus. Additionally, Christy has identified effective ways to support the Social Sciences faculty initiatives around low-cost textbooks and Open Educational Resources (OER). When involved in addressing a student concern, Christy is tireless in following through to ensure that the matter has been resolved effectively for the student. Her nominator provided a recent example of her efforts in working with a student through a hiccup in the process of getting a student registered for an independent study.
Christy, we thank you for the care and support that you provide to our students and for your efforts in advancing academic excellence.
Brandon Sheppard, Specialist, Learning Technology, was nominated by colleague Pete Miller for his efforts in fostering student success. In the nomination, Brandon was recognized for his tireless efforts in supporting the technical needs of faculty, staff and students over the many years he’s been with the College. Examples of his work, acknowledged in the nomination, include working with students in and out of the classroom by nurturing them, identifying with their struggles and serving as a sounding board for issues and conflicts that arise. His communication style of allowing others to open up and communicate, is particularly note-worthy and very much appreciated. Brandon is also recognized for offering students a confident and supporting voice in their endeavors, and providing reassurance to them that their educational journey will not be as traumatic as they may have imagined.
Brandon, we thank you for the care and support that you provide to our students and for your efforts in fostering student success.
Kim Wolf, Manager, Bookstore, was nominated by Margie Mattis for her efforts in fostering student success. Kim’s selection as an award recipient is based on the exceptional year she experienced with the bookstore becoming a food service provider at the York Campus. Kim’s nomination explained that this endeavor was an initiative that she presented to campus leadership several years ago. When Subway ended its relationship with the York campus, and students no longer had access to food on campus, Kim took the initiative to provide her expertise and utilize the bookstore to coordinate food service for our students. Through coordination with Chef Tom, she arranged for Chef Tom's students to make sandwiches, soups, salads, breakfast rolls, and cookies and have them delivered by courier to the York campus. Additionally, Kim worked with Kathy Brickner and her team to design a café that was appealing, safe, and cost-effective for the students. Finally, on January 28th, with several college administrators by her side the new "HAWK's CAFÉ” was unveiled. Kim’s belief in her vision and willingness to collaborate with a variety of colleagues, proved to be beneficial to all of our students at the York campus.
Kim, thank you for going above and beyond and for truly making HACC a better place for our faculty, staff, and students.
