On Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020, Professor Alexandra Makosky’s paralegal studies Ethics students spoke with alumnus Vishal Bajpai ‘19, now a first-year law student at Penn State Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle. Vishal spoke about professionalism as well as his journey at HACC and beyond. Vishal had been a student of Professor Makosky’s during the 2018-19 academic year and has remained in touch with her. Vishal had worked as a paralegal while a student at HACC, so he had relatable experiences to share with our students.
He had so many great pieces of advice for the students, but one of the best things he could give to them was the message of hope. He shared that even though he had a degree from Gettysburg College, prior to being hired as a paralegal, he had never had an office job. He had washed dishes and worked construction. He persisted, however, and hustled to get hired, and that first position set him on the path he is now on today. He credited HACC for helping him learn the basics of the law as well as Career Services for helping him prepare his resume and practice interviewing. His Best Practices tips of calendaring deadlines and understanding that they are a big deal in the legal profession as well as realizing that emails are forever and can be used against our clients were spot on and allowed the students to understand why we hold them to the standards we do in this Department. The class ended with the students asking if they could connect with Vishal on LinkedIn!
“Thank you” to Lori Hockley for making September's WE, Women Empowered webinar, “The Power of Global Connectivity - Forging and Nurturing Social Connections During Physical Distancing” available to HACC employees. It was an outstanding event!
