On September 27, 2023, Visiting Professor of Justice and Policy Studies Christian Matheis led a faculty development workshop on "Facilitation Techniques for Inclusive Classrooms" at Guilford College. This workshop provided an overview and demonstration of facilitation skills as a complement to conventional teaching methods. Christian is currently a CPPSET Inclusive Pedagogy Faculty Fellow. One of his goals is to enhance the quality of educational and co-curricular experiences for students and instructors from systemically marginalized backgrounds.

On October 3 and 10, Jonathan Howle (Learning Design and Development Technologist) conducted online synchronous training sessions on Panopto - the college's new video platform. Participants learned the essentials of how to create high-quality, engaging recordings on Panopto. In addition, they learned how to embed assessments into their Panopto videos, which can sync with Canvas. Below are the recordings of the two sessions:

Jonathan Howle joined Guilford College in May 2023. He holds an EdD in Adult Learning and Leadership from Columbia University, a M.F.A. in Playwriting from the New School, and a B.A. in English from UNC Chapel Hill.

The Faculty Development Committee hosted AI/ChatGPT Workshop: Part 2 on Wednesday, October 25, 3:45 - 5:15 p.m. in the Collaboratory, Hege Library. This workshop was co-led by Will Kelly (Digital Pedagogy and Scholarship Librarian) and Jon Howle (Learning Design and Development Technologist). They discussed the following topics during this HyFlex workshop:
Strategies and tools to help faculty address AI misuse effectively.
Strategies to integrate AI/ChatGPT into our courses constructively and ethically.
Strategies for educating students (as part of information literacy/digital competencies development efforts) as a preventative strategy.

Thanks to the leadership of Tom Guthrie (SOAN Professor, Chair of the Environmental and Sustainability Studies Program) and Sonalini Sapra (Associate Director of CPPSET, Collegiate faculty for PSCI and JPS), Guilford College partnered with the North Carolina Climate Justice Collective to bring two amazing opportunities to campus: an immersive multimedia performance and a two-day workshop. Both were free and open to all Guilford students, staff, and faculty. Faculty Development Committee (FDC) did not organize but co-sponsors this event. See below for details.

This event allowed Course (Re) Design participants to engage in meaningful discussions about their course revisions and collaborate with peers to explore pedagogical strategies that have proven effective this semester.

On Wednesday, November 29, 3:45-5:15 p.m., six faculty members (Dave Hildreth, Rachel Riskind, Christian Matheis, David Limburg, Karen Spira, and Katy Collier), two CAPE advisors who teach first-year students (Amber Slade, Jon Bohland), and four students from different class years (Tay Maxwell, Connor Moran, Miguel Nunez Palomares, and Jacob Mitchell) will lead a roundtable discussion on strategies to promote student classroom engagement.

There will be another information session about this grant opportunity in the early spring.
