Our Mission

Faculty Development at Guilford College supports faculty in their roles as teachers, scholars, community members, and individual human beings. We take a holistic view of faculty work, with the philosophy that effective and healthy faculty members will strengthen the entire institution.

Guilford College recognizes the importance of good teaching, making it the most important criterion in the faculty evaluation process. Faculty members, therefore, are encouraged to continually expand and refresh their teaching skills. By supporting faculty growth and demonstrating the benefits of lifelong learning, Faculty Development contributes to the quality of education available to Guilford students. We provide consultation and advice on effective teaching, including course planning, learning design, inclusive and accessible pedagogy, in-class teaching methods, active learning strategies, information and digital fluency, effective advising, and other aspects of teaching and learning requested by faculty. 

Our efforts are based on the belief that there is an inherent connection between teaching excellence and continuing scholarship and creative activity. Through grants and fellowships, Faculty Development supports faculty in professional development and helps them stay engaged in their fields. 

We also recognize the importance of faculty well-being as a component of maintaining a strong, sustainable academic program. Through faculty lunches, affinity groups, and other formal or informal activities, Faculty Development creates opportunities for faculty to connect and collaborate, discuss issues that affect their work, and develop strategies to balance professional and personal goals.
