Frequently Asked Questions

CURRENT STUDENT FAQ

Should I complete a Welcome Form?

Yes. This is how you register with the ARC. If you are a student who is seeking services and/or accommodations for the first time the ARC application should be completed.

Will disclosure of a disability and registration with ARC become part of my permanent transcript?

No. Disability-related information is confidential and kept on file with ARC.

Do I need to register with ARC every semester?

No. Once you have completed the registration process, you do not need to re-register. However, students must request their accommodation letters each term.

How will my instructors find out about my accommodations?

After completing the registration process, in order to use any accommodations, it is the student’s responsibility to request their accommodations at the beginning of each term. ARC will then send out 504 Accommodation Letters to each instructor upon receipt of student’s request.

Are accommodations retroactive?

No. Accommodations begin each term when your instructors have received your accommodation letter.

Do I have to disclose my disability to my instructors?

No. Individuals are not required to share medical information (i.e. diagnosis, medical documentation) with instructors. Share whatever you feel comfortable sharing that will help faculty understand your access needs. Individuals seeking reasonable accommodations in a particular course will need to request their  Accommodation Letter through the ARC ..

If I had accommodations in high school will they automatically transfer to college?

Not necessarily. Students who were eligible for services in high school may not necessarily be eligible for services or accommodations at the post-secondary level, as different laws with different definitions apply.

What do I do if I have a temporary disability such as a broken arm or leg?

Students are encouraged to speak with their individual instructors to see what arrangements can be made within the classroom. If necessary, the ARC can collaborate with students and their instructors to problem solve solutions to access issues caused by injury or temporary conditions. Accommodations will be determined based on the needs outlined in documentation.

I don't know if I have a disability, but I want to get tested for a learning disability. How do I do that?

Contact ARC to schedule a meeting to discuss your concerns or visit the office. They can provide information for testing evaluation and ideas for testing in Greensboro or at home.

Can I receive accommodations for my online classes?

Yes, a student with a qualifying disability who has registered with the ARC may be entitled to accommodations for online course work. Students must first register with the ARC and complete an intake interview with the ARC Director.

Can I receive accommodations for classes I am taking at another college or university?

NEW STUDENT FAQ

How does receiving accommodations in college differ from the process in high school?

The biggest difference is that the responsibility will lie mainly with the student, instead of the school or family.  Under the Individuals with Disabilities in Education (IDEA) Act, high schools are mandated to identify students with disabilities and provide free and provide a free and appropriate education.  However, colleges and universities do not have this responsibility.  Students must identify themselves to our office if they are seeking accommodations and must provide relevant documentation in accordance with the documentation guidelines to receive services.

Can a parent request accommodations for their child?

No. All requests must come directly from the student.

Can parents speak with Accessibility Resource Center staff regarding their child's accessibility needs?

If a parent wishes to discuss this, the student needs to fill out a release form specifically for our office.  This form differs from a FERPA form that may have been filled out elsewhere on campus.  However, students are not required to give permission in this way and if a release form is not on file, our staff cannot discuss your child.

What is the cost to receive services with the Accessibility Resource Center?

There is no charge for our services.
