The Percussion course is an essential part of our wind ensemble program, which also includes the Concert Band and Symphonic Band. In this course, students will master a wide range of percussion instruments, including drums, mallets, and auxiliary instruments. By the end of the year, students will have developed proficiency in each of these instruments.
During the fall season, percussionists join the Valhalla Vanguard (Marching Band), competing in Southern California field tournaments and performing at home football games and pep rallies. In Winter and Spring, percussionists become part of the Wind Ensemble, showcasing their talents in seasonal concerts both on and off campus, as well as participating in Southern California music festivals and Valhalla High School’s Graduation Ceremony. Additionally, percussion students perform and compete as part of the Winter Percussion unit, under the direction of Jake Harman, at Southern California percussive arts events.
The ensemble performs a diverse repertoire, including contemporary and traditional wind band music, orchestral transcriptions, marches, and popular tunes. After completing the percussion course, students may have the chance to advance to the Honors Percussion course, based on the director's discretion and a successful audition. Both the honors and non-honors courses fulfill UC/CSU (F) and district graduation requirements for visual and performing arts.
