The hollow-chisel mortise cuts the rectangular opening for a mortise-and-tenon joint. It performs two operations at the same time. As the bit bores the hole, the hollow, square chisel which surrounds it trims the hole making it square.
Safety practices to remember before operating the hollow-chisel mortiser:
Check with your instructor for the correct method of installing the mortise bit and chisel. The cutting end of the bit should extend about 1/16” below the cutting edges of the hollow chisel.
Obtain permission from your instructor before operating the mortise.
Clamp all stock securely to the table.
Make adjustments for depth stops and lateral travel before turning on the mortiser.
Make adjustments only when the machine is at a complete stop.
The speed of the drill press for mortising should be about 2250 RPM for softwoods and 1500 RPM for hardwoods.
Safety practices to follow when operating the hollow-chisel mortiser:
Make sure that you are the only one inside the safety working area.
Turn on the power only after permission has been given from the instructor.
Keep hands away from the chisel when the machine is turned on.
Feed the chisel only as fast as the machine will cut easily.
Do not cut more than ½’ deep at one time.
Turn off power immediately if cutting is difficult or if the chisel burns. Check with your instructor.
Lift the bit clear of the stock before moving the table or stock.
Turn off the power after using the mortiser and stand by until the machine has stopped.
