Sanding machines have been developed to speed up the sanding process necessary in preparing an object for final finishing. Belt sanders are the most aggressive type of handheld sanders and used for removing a lot of material. Palm and random orbit sanders are used for finishing projects.
OBTAIN PERMISSION FROM THE INSTRUCTOR BEFORE STARTING THE MACHINE.
Understand the purpose for each type of handheld sanders (i.e. belt sanders, palm sanders, and random orbit sanders).
Use the appropriate grit for the job at hand.
Work to be sanded must be clamped to the bench with a clamp or bench vise.
When using a belt or vibrating sander, set the sander on the work and turn it on. Move the sander back and forth following the grain direction. Always hold portable sanding machines firmly.
Before plugging in the portable belt sander, lay it on its side and check to insure the trigger is not locked.
All sanding machines must be allowed to stop completely before they are placed on the bench.
Be careful when sanding. Be aware of the power cord and do not run over it with the sander.
