We've been busy since getting back to school in the New Year. I haven't shared in the blog for quite a while. Check out the December and January photo folders for some snapshots of some activities we've been busy with. Here are a few things that we've been up to lately:
Telus World of Science - We had a great field trip this past week. The kids got to experience many things. They got to explore light energy by doing some cool, hand's on experiments. Then we experienced a good, interactive, IMAX show about Sound. After that, the kids had time to explore the exhibits. We ended our day in the Zeilder Dome, watching a musical laser show. I know that it was a costly field trip and I thank you for providing them this opportunity. Thanks to the parents who joined us as volunteers!
Art - Check out some of the art projects the kids have been working on lately (photos). I have been keeping their work at school and will send it home at the end of the year inside of a memory book (binder). The kids have also been working on monthly photo collages to include in the binder. The kids worked on drawing some Olympic rings yesterday. It looks like a simple project, but it took many skills and a lot of patience to complete. I am so proud of the kids for how well they handled it. Our artwork will be on display in the school entryway this month. We will also be presenting with 2A during the assembly at the end of the month. I will send more details when we get closer to the date. Our theme will be the Olympics.
Social Studies - We are starting to look at Canada's Heritage.
Science - We have started learning about what energy is. We focus on Light and Sound energy. The experiences the kids had at the Telus World of Science were a great way to introduce these concepts.
Report Cards - I hope you all have had a chance to check out your child's report card. Let me know if you have any questions. Each and ever child has shown a lot of growth over the first half of the year. I know that this growth will continue as we progress through the second half of the year.
Math - The kids have been exploring Growing and Changing Patterns. They have been working hard of number patterns this past week. Again, I encourage you to ask your child to count. Couting by 1's or skip counting by 2's, 5's, 10's, 20's, 25's, etc. to 1000 is a skill we are trying to develop in grade 2. The more practice they have, the more fluent they will be with numbers and counting. Our next unit will be working with numbers to 1000.
Valentine's Day - I will send home a list next week. I encourage students who are bringing in cards, to make sure that everyone is included. On Friday, Feb 13, we will do a couple fun STEM activities, play some games, and do some Valentines day/Kindness themed activities. Feel free to send a fun snack, of your choice, in for your child that day.
Feb 2 - I will be checking the Jan home reading calendar. If your child has been reading at home, please initial the dates. 10-15 minutes of reading (good level material) outside of school can be so beneficial. I wish we had more time during the day to just dedicate to reading, but with all the other curriculum we have to cover, there just isn't time. I also encourage you to sometimes listen to your child while he/she is reading. Asking questions about the stories helps build their comprehension skills. Please contact me if you would like me to send any home reading books home with your child.
Feb 4 Winter Walk - If you would like to join us on our Winter Walk, please let me know. We will be leaving around 1pm.
Feb 5 & 6 Teachers Convention (no school)
Feb 11-13 Skating - Please let me know if you are able to come volunteer. We will need parents to tie skates and adults on the ice as well. We will be skating from 2-2:30 again. We will head to the arena around 1:45.
Feb 16 Family day - no school
Feb 18 Wellness afternoon
Check out the Admin Corner if you haven't had a chance to already.
