After reading A Poppy Is to Remember by Heather Patterson, the students created haiku poems to honour the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance Day. They learned the haiku structure—three lines with a 5-7-5 syllable pattern—and used this format to choose words that captured the significance of poppies on this day. Each student then typed their haiku into a Google Slide and inserted a poppy image as the background, making their poem visually meaningful. These slides beautifully showcase their respect and gratitude through both words and imagery, honoring the poppy as a symbol of remembrance.
Our class created a beautiful poppy art display for the front foyer. Students painted vibrant poppies with acrylics and added a grassy background using watercolours, combining techniques in a mixed media project. This artwork reflects the meaning of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance and provided a warm welcome for guests attending the Remembrance Day ceremony.
The Grade 3 students had an amazing day on Wednesday exploring the Telus World of Science in Edmonton! They loved the hands-on galleries, discovering science through fun and interactive exhibits. A highlight was the IMAX film “Great Bear Rainforest,” where they learned about Canada’s beautiful coastal ecosystems.
After lunch, the students took part in a Beading and Coding workshop where they created a beaded artifact while learning how algorithms, patterns, loops, and sequences appear in nature and culture. They used a bead loom and pony beads to connect creativity with computer programming concepts.
A big thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers for helping make this trip such a success!
