This week, students enjoyed a festive writing activity after reading Santa Is Stuck! by Rhonda Gowler Greene. They wrote a short “how-to” paragraph to explain step by step how they would get Santa unstuck. We focused on using sequencing words like first, next, then, and finally to organize their ideas. It was a fun and creative way to practice writing and sequencing!
Students then completed other engaging literacy tasks. One of these was Making Words, where we took all the letters from a larger word from the story, Christmas, and created as many new words as possible. This activity helped strengthen their spelling and word recognition skills. They also worked on Vocabulary, selecting interesting words from the story, looking up their definitions in an online dictionary, and using these words in sentences to deepen their understanding. These activities encouraged creativity and reinforced key reading and writing strategies, all while making learning fun.
This week, students participated in Computer Science Education Week with virtual sessions led by Mr. Maltais. They explored coding using Scratch Jr., creating Christmas backgrounds and animating their very own Grinch, and also completed Mix and Move with AI on Code.org, solving coding puzzles and learning how artificial intelligence can help characters move and respond. Through these activities, students practiced computational thinking, sequencing actions, and troubleshooting their programs while combining creativity with problem-solving. It was a fun, hands-on way for students to explore coding and AI and see how technology can bring stories and games to life!
