SOL Testing

General SOL testing requirements

Students receive verified credit when they pass a class and its respective end-of-course SOL test. End-of-course SOL tests are only offered in some high school classes (eight at MLW), and the Virginia Department of Education determines how many and what verified credits are required for graduation. For the class of 2022 and beyond, the state requires students to pass five end-of-course SOL tests. Federal guidelines require a student to be assessed one time while in high school in math, science and reading. SOL end-of-course tests taken in social studies while in middle school may count towards these five. Students are not allowed to take more SOL tests than needed for graduation purposes.

These five will be as follows:

· Biology - freshman year

· One math SOL test - freshman year (For students who have already taken Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II in middle school, the school will use substitute test results such as the math score from the SAT typically taken in 11th grade.)

· One social studies test - World History I or Geography from middle school if the student tested in either of these or World History II or US History during 10th grade year

· Writing during 10th grade and is usually given in March

· Reading during 11th grade

Covid Impact on SOL testing

School closures have impacted SOL testing in Virginia. During the 2019 – 20 school year, the state allowed schools to award Locally Awarded Verified Credits according to local guidelines. Maggie Walker awarded verified credits to all students who passed classes and needed a verified credit for that class.
