WHAT IS INTOLERANCE?

Intolerance means unwillingness to accept views, beliefs or behavior of others. Intolerance is mostly judged by someone’s behavior of lack of respect . Intolerant people have a different personality so they find it difficult to accept other people’s views and practices due to the lack of acceptance to experience the feeling of fear and uncertainty. An example of intolerance can be racism that is discrimination of someone by their skin colour which can be considered as intolerance. The best way for stopping intolerance is to have genuine tolerance , being open with everyone and finding out similarities between people than spreading hate. In ancient India , there was religious intolerance when there was violence between Hindus and Muslims.

UNRAVELLING INTOLERANCE

Stereotype is a generalized belief about a particular category of people. It is an expectation that people might have about every person of a particular group and is continuing since ages. A victim of this is likely to have a fixed mindset against something or someone and is not ready to neglect that perception. Groups are often stereotyped on the basis of sex, gender identity, race and ethnicity, nationality, age, socioeconomic status, language, and so forth. For example; one can have beliefs that women and men are equally capable of becoming successful electricians but at the same time many can associate electricians more with men than women, people have a stereotype of a woman being a chef but not man, a man’s job is to earn and a woman to be a housewife, Girls should play with dolls and boys should play with trucks and also that boys should be directed to like blue and green; girls toward red and pink. These perceptions have had a home in our minds since a time now. Even educated people have such poor perceptions. This sought of thinking is toxic for the society and needs to be cured for a better future. Here are a few ways we can help fight for it:

 REALIZATION

one shall be made to realize that a fixed mindset against something is wrong and only then would stand a scope of change.

 • ENCOURAGE YOUNG WOMEN TO EXCEL IN STEM SUBJECTS

There's been a lot of discussion lately about getting young women more involved in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and math). Significantly more men than women study STEM subjects in school and pursue STEM jobs after graduation. Why? Chances are it has nothing to do with the biological capabilities of the students and everything to do with cultural norms for gender. If a child expresses interest in math, the sciences, or engineering, it may be worth encouraging them to explore those subjects in depth, as they can lead to exciting and personally fulfilling careers or hobbies.

 PARTICIPATE EQUALLY IN HOUSEHOLD CHORES

Every family or even group of roommates must make decisions about who will perform the household chores, especially those that no one enjoys doing. It's unfair to suggest that women should do all the cooking and cleaning. It's also unfair to expect that men should do all the yard work if they'd rather contribute in some other way. So, who should do the chores that no one wants to do? Decide fairly so that each housemate contributes their fair side

RACISM AND XENOPHOBIA

POLITICAL INTOLERANCE

Political intolerance is when people are subjected to a violation of political rights (like the right to freedom of speech) and civil liberties. In developing nations like India- Corruption, perjury, espionage, etc. are increasing with time, leading to the exploitation of the common masses.  An intolerant society cannot tolerate the expressions of ideas which challenges its current doctrines and wisdom. Ultimately, different thoughts at a political and social level have to be suppressed and this is the time when the real destruction of a nation starts.

Political leaders often deprive people of their rights and show supremacy, even though it’s not valid in a democratic country. This has led to large-scale agitation as such practices are leading to poverty and unemployment. Even deserving candidates are unable to secure a place in jobs and institutions because of bribery. People in a politically intolerant society are unable to express their views which challenge these evil practices and are usually oppressed by so-called politically and economically stronger people. as these thoughts are suppressed, people start un-trusting the system and resorting to violence, This causes massive destabilisation of the democratic system as the system now loses people’s trust.

THE NUISANCE OF CORRUPTION

 We celebrated our greatest achievement

Seven decades ago

When we won independence

from the whim of the white man.

But now we face a storm,

that destroyed the lives of countless,

The white man left us divided and weak,

And made us like him hungry for monitory richness.

Oh! Politics? A dirty thing it is,

Makes a man of virtue the hungriest of all

and all the others who are his subjects

Cry and die from starvation and poverty.

Corruption? A persistent evil it is,

Can leave an entire nation barren and dead,

No man is there that corruption will spare,

And the ones with riches you will see would have fled.

A vicious form of intolerance it is,

And so to wipe it from existence, we must pledge,

We will mend our ways and respect the laws,

We won’t now bear anymore frauds,

And teach all the corrupt ones in power,

That with great authority comes great responsibility.

Fighting Intolerance

Learn about different cultures and beliefs. Treat everyone with respect and kindness, no matter what. Accept the beliefs or practices of other people even when they are different from your own. Make everyone feel welcome and accepted in a group or community regardless of their background or differences. Stand up for yourself and others when faced with intolerance.
