The Choctaw tribe believes in good and evil spirits. They worship Sun as a deity, who has the power of life and death. Before the arrival of missionaries, they had no concept of prayer. They never worshipped idols but believed in the existence of a great spirit, which is omnipresent and possesses supernatural powers.
On the death of a person, different branches of the person's family took turns sitting with the body each night. Then the body was buried in the cemetery with preaching services and hymns. The dishes which the dead person ate were broken over the grave so that no one else could use them.
