OUR MAGNIFICENT SOLAR SYSTEM

Have you ever wondered what’s there in the Sky? Has the idea of watching the stars in the sky ever made you curious to know where they have come from? Have you ever wondered whether there is any life on the other planets too?

Well! if yes, then you are on the right page

Our magnificent Solar system is holding lots of amazing facts and theories that everyone should know about. The solar system itself is a giant hub of knowledge. In our solar system, there are 8 planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune), 5 dwarf planets (Pluto, Ceres, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris), 181 moons, 566,000 asteroids, and The Sun. Some of the most interesting objects in our solar system are also the smallest or largest. In addition to the sun, planets, and moons, our solar system has a variety of small objects such as asteroids, comets, stars, meteors, and moons. These have affected what has happened on Earth in many ways.

The solar system consists of eight planets revolving around the sun in their orbits. The arrangement of planets in respect to the position of the sun, i.e. in order of distance from the sun is as follows.

Let us now know about the Asteroids, Meteors, Comets and Satellites which are also a part of our Solar System.

Asteroids

Small planet-like bodies which orbit around the sun are called asteroids or planetoids. Ceres is the largest asteroid and was discovered by Giuseppe Piazzi in the year 1801. The number of asteroids currently known in our solar system is 6,00,000.

Meteors

Small pieces of rocks and sand in the solar system are known as meteors. They are commonly called shooting stars. Millions of meteors are found every day in Earth’s atmosphere. They hit Earth's atmosphere at 37 miles per second.

Comets

Huge lumps of snow and rocky dust are known as comets. Halley’s comet is one of the most famous comets and was last seen in the year 1986. It would appear again after 76 years that is in 2062. Also, they orbit the sun in elliptical paths.

Satellites

A satellite is an object that orbits (goes around) a planet. There are several hundred natural satellites, or moons, in our Solar System.

There are two types of Satellites: Natural Satellites

Artificial Satellites

Natural Satellites: A natural satellite is any celestial body in space that orbits around a larger body. Moons are called natural satellites because they orbit planets.

Example: Moon, Phobos, Titan, Ariel, etc.

Artificial Satellites: An artificial satellite is an object that people have made and launched into orbit using rockets. There are currently over a thousand active satellites orbiting the Earth. They are used for communication and for weather reports. Example: Sputnik 1, Aryabhata, Sputnik 2, Mir, Salyut 1.

Dwarf Planets

A dwarf planet is a celestial body that -orbits the sun, has enough mass to assume a nearly round shape, has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit and is not a moon.

There are 5 dwarf planets in our Solar System: Pluto, Ceres, Make Make, Eris and Haumea.
