The Big Freeze Theory

As the universe has been discovered to be expanding all the time, scientists came up with the idea of the Big Bang theory. Before the Big Bang explosion, there was a small, hot and dense ball. After the Big Bang explosion, the universe started to expand at a super-high and accelerating speed but also started to cool down. Just after the explosion, the temperature was 5 billion degrees Celsius which then cooled down to 1 billion degrees Celsius after a few minutes. This is one of the reasons why our space is so cold. Due to this fact, astrophysicists have come up with another theory known as the ‘Big Freeze’ or the ‘Heat death’. The names ‘Heat death’ and ‘Big Freeze’ might seem to have different meanings but have the same meaning i.e. decrease in temperature of the universe to 0 degrees Celsius. After the big freeze, astrophysicists believe that the temperature will be the same everywhere and survival will reach to a critical position. It is possible that there is a further decrease in temperature and the universe gets colder than today’s Neptune. Once in 1998, it was discovered that dark energy level is expanding in the universe and the speed of expansion of the universe is getting faster and faster. It is estimated that currently, dark energy surrounds 70% of the universe. This increases the chances for the occurrence of the Big Freeze. If the speed of expansion gets inevitably faster, then the universe will transform into a cold, dead place full of emptiness.

The Big Rip Theory

After the Big Freeze, the universe would start expanding itself. This expansion will lead to the end of galaxies, stars, planets, and all the matter present in space. This theory of infinite expansion is called The Big Rip. After 22 billion years from now, this expansion would start. This theory was first proved by Marcelo Disconzi in 2015.

If dark energy gets stronger and stronger over time, it will eventually overcome everything, and you’ll have a universe with nothing left. That’s the ‘Big Rip’ –, it will eventually overcome all forces of attraction, and then everything will be torn apart.

This theory takes the rapid and accelerating expansion of the universe as its starting point, claims it will increase constantly, eventually reaching infinity with cataclysmic results.

Alternatively, we could be headed for the Big Crunch, when the expansion of the universe slows to a crawl and the Big Bang happens in reverse as everything implodes back into a singularity.

The Big Crunch

We all are inquisitive to know what will happen if the universe stops expanding.

The big crunch is a hypothetical scenario given for the future of the universe. It was proposed by Paul Davies. According to this theory, the expansion of the universe might not continue forever and will eventually reverse due to the strong gravitational attraction of the universe. This will lead to collapsing of the universe into a super hot and dense singularity. This is called The Big Crunch. At this point, the universe will be at a point where it all started - The Big Bang. It will again give rise to a new Universe.

The Big Slurp

The Big Slurp Theory is the most recent theory that came into light after a Higgs-like particle was discovered in 2012 which is thought to give everything mass and suggesting that Universe is in an unstable state. If it is in an unstable state, in billions of years it could tip over the edge, causing a bubble to appear possibly from another Universe. The bubble will begin to expand at the speed of light, annihilating everything in its path, making way for a new Universe. This scenario is interesting because it could theoretically happen at any time. It could happen now, at this moment, or it could happen in billions of years. Unlike, the other scenarios and theories, this does not require much time to bring an end to the Universe.
