Abstract:
This study is related to The effect of Different Soil Types of Southern Washington County on the Growth Rate of Wheat and Rye. This is important so farmers could get better growth and yield from their wheat and rye crop. Also the is important so if the plant stalk is bigger that means that if the farmer made the plant stalks into bales the would get more bedding. Previous studies have shown that rye grows best sandy or light loams and wheat grows best in loam soil. Wheat’s preferable soil ph is between 6 and 7, and rye”s preferable ph of soil is between 5 and 7. The objective of this study was to find out what type of soil wheat and rye grow best in, in Southern Washington County. If wheat and rye are planted in soils from around Washington County including: Vergennes, Rhinebeck silt/clay, Hudson gravel loam, Otisville/Nassau sandy loam, Cossayuna sandy loam, Hudson Loam, and Hudson silt loam. then wheat and rye will grow best in Hudson gravel loam, because wheat and rye would both grow best in loam soil (SARE 2007) (Winfield, WheatBP). This was researched by… (methods) This experiment will be conducted in a controlled indoor area. The temperature will be approximately 70 degrees and humidity will not be controlled and will most likely be low because of the season. The amount of water applied to the plant will be controlled also. The amount of light applied to the plant will be controlled by using an AntLux led full spectrum grow light. 28 small Dixie cups will be needed as well. My data suggest wheat grows best in Otisville loam soil and rye grows best hudson sandy loam.
