Planning to join the military after graduation? Use this checklist to stay on track and make your enlistment process smooth and successful.
Research all branches: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Space Force
Decide between Active Duty, Reserves, or National Guard (see chart below)
Talk to recruiters and ask detailed questions
Attend career fairs or virtual information sessions
Step 2: Connect with a Recruiter
Schedule a meeting with a recruiter
Discuss job roles, enlistment bonuses, and career paths
Learn about the enlistment process and requirements
Step 3: Take the ASVAB
Study for the ASVAB (use practice tests & study guides)
Take the test at school or a MEPS location
Review your AFQT score and job qualifications
Retake the ASVAB if you want to improve your score
Step 4: Stay Fit & Focused
Maintain good grades and graduate on time
Follow a regular fitness routine (running, push-ups, sit-ups, etc.)
Avoid legal trouble and drug use
Complete a full medical exam at MEPS
Pass the background check
Choose your Military Occupational Specialty (MOS)
Take the Oath of Enlistment
Step 6: Join the Delayed Entry Program (DEP)
Confirm your ship-out date
Stay in touch with your recruiter
Attend DEP meetings and prepare for boot camp
Social Security card
Birth certificate
State-issued photo ID or driver’s license
High school diploma or graduation certificate
Bank account info for direct deposit
Step 8: Get Ready for Boot Camp
Ask your recruiter for a boot camp packing list
Prepare mentally and physically
Arrange transportation to MEPS if not provided
Notify school staff of your plans
Say goodbye to family and friends
Set up a will or power of attorney (if needed)
Handle subscriptions, phone plans, and finances
Step 10: Stay Motivated
Remember your goals and why you’re joining
Connect with veterans or mentors
Take pride in your decision to serve your country
