Touchpad Tips

The Chromebook touchpad is slightly different from the traditional laptops. The touchpad can be used to move the Chromebook arrow pointer and to select items on the screen.

Please see the following pictures that demonstrate the Chromebook touchpad, finger placement and finger movements that will allow you use the touchpad in order to click, right-click, scroll up and down, and drag and drop.

Fix Touchpad Problems

If your touchpad stops working, try the following steps:

  1. Make sure there is no dust or dirt on the touchpad.
  2. Press the Esc key several times.
  3. Drumroll your fingers on the touchpad for ten seconds.
  4. Turn your Chromebook off, then back on again.
  5. Perform a hard reset.

Change how Your Touchpad Works

You can tap your touchpad to click, or change the direction you scroll. Here's how:

  1. Click your account photo.
  2. Click Settings .
  3. In the "Device" section, click Touchpad (or Touchpad and mouse).
  4. Change how your touchpad works:
    • Turn tap-to-click on or off
    • Turn on tap dragging
    • Swap your primary mouse button, if you use a mouse
    • Adjust how quickly your pointer moves: Move the sliders next to "Touchpad speed" or "Mouse speed"
    • Choose type of scrolling: Traditional (swipe up to move up the page) or Australian (swipe up to move down the page)
