School counseling lessons are whole-class learning experiences led by the school counselor and taught in collaboration with classroom teachers. These lessons are designed to support students’ growth in areas like self-awareness, responsible decision-making, managing emotions, building healthy relationships, and solving problems.
Through stories, discussions, games, interactive activities, and ongoing teacher modeling/ reinforcement, students build lifelong skills that contribute to their personal well-being, academic success, and positive behavior.
See the chart below for Sue Cleveland's School Counseling Program Standards.
SCE's School Counseling Program offers various small group opportunities throughout the year. These small groups are designed to support and encourage social, personal, and/or academic growth among student participants. Teachers and parents/guardians may reach out to the school counselor for more info, or to enroll a child in a group.
Small groups are typically held once a week for 30 minutes, for 6-8 weeks.
Examples of previous small groups:
Conflict Resolution
Emotional Regulation
Family Changes (Divorce, Grief, Adoption, etc.)
Friendship

Individual counseling is available for students who are experiencing specific life events that may be impacting their ability to focus, participate, or succeed in the classroom. These short-term, solution-focused sessions (typically lasting no more than 6–8 weeks) provide a safe and supportive space for students to express feelings, learn coping strategies, and build resilience.
Topics might include challenges like separation anxiety, the death of a loved one, adjusting to a new school, or other significant changes. The goal is to help students feel more secure and supported so they can better access their learning and thrive at school.
Students who may need ongoing, long-term support are referred to our school-based mental health counselor or connected with one of our trusted community partners.
