Erin's Law is part of the state's health and safety education for public schools. It mandates that all students in grades pre-K through 12 receive age-appropriate instruction on sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention. This legislation, passed in 2014, aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to recognize, report, and prevent sexual abuse and assault.
School Counselors support a safer school environment by equipping students with knowledge and resources to protect themselves and others from sexual abuse and assault. One class lesson per year, at each grade level, is dedicated to this safety education. The South Carolina Department of Education has developed instructional units specifically for Erin's Law, ensuring consistency, transparency, and quality across the state. You can learn more about these instructional resources here.
Please reach out to your school counselor with any questions you may have regarding this legislation.
