A great way to build community and vulnerability among staff is through listening circles. Attached are examples and a guide for leading listening circles. This is most effective if introduced through a leader who shares their own answers (with some vulnerability yet balanced to ensure appropriateness for the work place).
This section provides activities in the following categories moving from simple/easy meeting activities (left), self care, to explicit and in-depth SEL development among staff (right). Focus on ways to build staff up, celebrate their strengths, and help them connect to one another first. Once you've established trust and community, you can focus on increasing more in-depth SEL among staff.
Signature Practices help build community and sense of belonging while promoting individual voice.
Welcoming Inclusion Activities (hyperlinked) include check-ins, mindfulness, and methods for building relationships. The activities should consider how all staff/students will be able to participate.
Engagement Activities apply the content being taught in engaging ways and using methods in which students connect to one another. Examples are turn and talk, small group discussion, reflection, and synthesizing information with other students.
Optimistic Closures employ methods for students or staff to reflect on how to extend learning (or for staff to extend professional development). This includes such activities as naming an aha, a wondering, and a goal or a ticket out the door.
Video shows an introduction to the why and how of self care for educators.
