Tiered Supports for SEL
Tiered Supports for SEL
GCS uses a tiered approach to providing SEL instruction (see description on MTSS page):
Tier 1 (All) SEL instruction is provided to all students with the program Rethink Ed*. Rethink Ed provides an assessment for grades 3-12 and lesson plans for grades 5K - 12. Staff can access the Rethink Ed lessons within the Staff Backpack on the GCS Portal. Resources such as the scope and sequence for Rethink Ed are located on the Rethink Ed page in this site.
Additionally, we encourage training in such programs as Conscious Discipline, Capturing Kids' Hearts, or Leader in Me to help staff with building relationships and with creating safe and healthy environments.
*Schools may continue to use a different SEL program such as Second Step or Leader in Me
Tier 2 (Some/Targeted Support)
Based on the SEL assessment, EWRS, and teacher, student, and parent referrals, students may need additional SEL instruction. Tier 2 supports include Rethink Ed, Zones of Regulation, Mindfulness, Social Thinking, and small group counseling lessons.
Tier 3 (Few/Intensive Support)
Students showing a need for intensive or individualized support should be referred to the OnTrack process or provided with intensive SEL instruction and/or individualized behavior plans. Rethink Ed, Zones of Regulation, Mindfulness, Social Thinking may be used for Tier 3 supports.
