The Compost Crew Program at Reedy Laurel Elementary gives second graders a hands-on opportunity to help reduce food waste and care for our school’s composting systems. Each Wednesday, all students can add leftover fruits and vegetables to our compost trays in the cafeteria at lunch, while second graders collect the compost carts and return them to the Wet Lab. Each week when second grade students come to Wet Lab they prepare the food scraps and add them to our compost tumbler or vermicomposter, where worms help turn the scraps into nutrient-rich compost. Through this experience, students learn how small actions can make a big difference for our environment.
