Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to the RHS Art Department! I will be teaching Art4 Honors/AP Studio Art to your student this year. I look forward to exploring a higher level and more in-depth investigation of visual art with your student. It is a privilege to be teaching here at Riverside High – one of the finest high schools in the state! Please refer to my website for a detailed course description and syllabus.

My Background: 17th Year teaching Visual Art at Riverside High

B.S. in Comprehensive Fine Art from Illinois State University

Overview: Class Syllabus is available on my district website (listed above).

The Art 4 Honors class is a semester-long class, comprised of a majority of students who are working towards producing a college-level body of artwork. Art 4H students will follow a curriculum that helps them prepare for AP Studio, should they decide to pursue. Students will expand upon their skills learned in Art3H, refining techniques and experimenting with new ideas and media. This course encourages and expects creative and systematic investigation of formal and conceptual issues in Drawing and 2D Design. Art 4H students can independently pursue their media of choice, while still following scheduled assignments. It is crucial that your student is prepared to work diligently during class, as well as outside of class. (Pre-req: Art 3 Honors)

The AP Studio Art class is comprised of AP Studio students, who are working towards producing a college-level body of artwork, to be submitted to the AP College Board, through studio practice, application of design concepts, and informed decision making. This course encourages and expects creative and systematic investigation of formal and conceptual issues in Drawing and 2D Design. It is crucial that your student is prepared to work diligently during class, as well as outside of class. Students will use Art 4 Honors class as a bridge to the spring session of AP Studio.

Per RHS Handbook: The use of cell phones/electronic devices is not allowed in class.

When approved by the teacher, students will be allowed to use their cell phone for photographing art. Chromebooks will be used to research artists/images for art projects.

Classroom Rules:

1. Be on time to class and in your seat at the tardy bell, with your materials, ready to work. Daily assignments are posted on the board.

2. Respect others and the property of others, using art supplies/equipment with care.

3. Raise your hand to be recognized and to speak.

4. Stay on task every day to take advantage of your learning experience.

Consequences for Violations of Classroom Rules are posted on my website.

Grading:

  • Teacher will provide criteria/rubric for evaluating work when the assignment is given. Rubrics will vary due to project materials and focus of content knowledge.

  • 100 point system per assignment. Extra credit will also be available.

  • Major grades = 60% (studio projects, tests), Minor grades = 40% (quizzes, class assignments, sketchbook, technique sheets)

  • Assignments are given in advance with due date. Each day assignments are late, a letter grade is deducted, until it reaches an F. Students can receive up to 59 points before the end of the 9 weeks.

A = 100-90: Excellent. The student shows exemplary efforts beyond course requirements. A high degree of skill, producing superior results seen consistently in work. Self-motivation and progressive exploration can be seen in the student’s work. The student has good attitude, work ethic and is open to constructive criticism. The student cleans up after him/herself and offers help to others, is respectful and a positive influence in the class.

B = 89-90: Good. A grade above average indicating the student is producing work of high quality and consistent determination. The student actively participates in the class discussions and critiques. The student cleans up after him/herself. The work may at times be of superior rating and average at others, but always a consistency of comprehension of design concepts.

C = 79-70: Average. This student shows sound quality in work and participation. The student completes the minimum requirements of the course without showing any improvement of skills. The student cleans up when prompted.

D = 69-60: Below Average. This grade is indicative of lack of genuine commitment. The work of such a student may be incomplete, low test grades, and work showing little evidence of comprehension of design concepts and techniques. Carelessness in work is obvious and very little time or effort has been invested. The student does not clean up or put away tools.

F = 59-0: Failing. Well below the minimum requirements for the course. Little to no evidence of work completed to any acceptable standard.

Make-Up Work: It is the student’s responsibility to make the necessary arrangements to make up work. Excused absences may have up to 5 days to turn in missed work. Make-up work for unexcused absences must be approved by teacher and/or administrator.

Books/Materials: Textbooks will remain in the classroom for the most part. Students may sign out an art book, or art media (markers, colored pencils, etc.) and return it by their art class the following day. Tools will not be allowed out of the room.

Student Needs/Medical Alerts: Please contact me if your child requires special needs or if there are any medical issues of which I should be aware.

AP Studio Students are expected to bring the following supplies:

  • Art Fee of $20.00 (listed on student fee schedule).

  • 9”x 12” spiral bound sketchbook (for use as a visual journal) (A graded assignment). 80-90# paper, 100 sheets

Artwork will be stored in drawers/cabinets at school. **A school digital camera will be available for student use if you do not have access to one.

The Fine Arts Center and the Governor’s School for the Arts may be considered with a portfolio of work.

Please review this information with your student and sign below, acknowledging that the class rules and procedures have been read and understood. Return the bottom section of this letter to your student’s next class. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me. I look forward to a creative year ahead!

Thank you,

Visual Art Re-Do Expectations

To better serve our student’s educational needs and provide consistency across the school, the Visual Art Department at Riverside High School will adhere to the following re-do expectations .

  • Students will have the opportunity to redo one major grade per semester.

    • All students have the opportunity to redo one major grade per semester.

      • The redo grade will replace the original grade.

      • Students must discuss their intent to replace a failing major grade with their teacher.

      • Art-making Assignments are excluded from Re-Do Policy.

  • If the re-do grade is lower than the original grade, the original grade will be honored.

  • No redos will be accepted after the 8th week of the quarter so that teachers have time to grade before the nine weeks end.

  • The major grade has to have been submitted to be considered for the redo policy.

    • Meaning a major assignment that was never turned in is not eligible for redo.

  • All major assessments will provide a bonus question - “What did you know about this unit/topic that wasn’t covered on this assessment? which will allow students the opportunity to describe what they know about the content that wasn’t asked on the assessment.

    • This question will be graded as Bonus Points.
