Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to the RHS Art Department! I will be teaching Art 3 Honors to your student this year. I look forward to sharing my love of art with your child. It is a privilege to be teaching here at Riverside High – one of the finest high schools in the state!

My Background: 16th Year teaching Visual Art at Riverside High

2010 AP Studio Art Endorsement

1998-2005 Substitute Art Teacher in Greenville County

Freelance Artist Experience & Continuing Working Artist

B.S. in Comprehensive Fine Art from Illinois State University

Overview: Class Syllabus/Scope and Sequence available on my website.

Art 3H students will continue sequential learning of art skills and concepts through in-depth exploration of a variety of media and techniques. Art 3H will be encouraged to pursue personal choices in media and subject matter, while learning new techniques not seen in Art 2. Students will keep an art portfolio throughout the school year, in preparation for AP Studio. Investigation into contemporary and local artists will be a focus, while reviewing the masters. Assignments follow the S.C. Visual Arts Standards. In addition to learning and developing art skills, RHS art students will learn to meet deadlines, be productive, work efficiently, and to find confidence in exploring their creative side.

Per RHS Handbook: The use of cell phones/electronic devices is not allowed in class.

When approved by the teacher, students will be allowed to use their cell phone for photographing art. Chromebooks will be used to research artists/images for art projects.

Classroom Rules:

1. Be on time to class and in your seat at the tardy bell, with your materials, ready to work. Daily assignments are posted on the board.

2. Respect others and the property of others; using art supplies/equipment with care.

3. Raise your hand to be recognized to speak.

4. Stay on task every day to take advantage of your learning experience.

Consequences for Violations of Classroom Rules are posted on my website.

Grading:

  • Teacher will provide criteria/rubric for evaluating work when the assignment is given. Rubrics will vary due to project materials and focus of content knowledge.

  • 100 point system per assignment. Extra credit will also be available.

  • Major grades = 60% (studio projects, tests), Minor grades = 40% (quizzes, class assignments, sketchbook, technique sheets)

  • Assignments are given in advance with due date. Each day assignments are late, a letter grade is deducted, until it reaches an F. Students can receive up to 59 points before the end of the 9 weeks.

A = 100-90: Excellent. The student shows exemplary efforts beyond course requirements. A high degree of skill, producing superior results seen consistently in work. Self-motivation and progressive exploration can be seen in the student’s work. The student has good attitude, work ethic and is open to constructive criticism. The student cleans up after him/herself and offers help to others, is respectful and a positive influence in the class.

B = 89-90: Good. A grade above average indicating the student is producing work of high quality and consistent determination. The student actively participates in the class discussions and critiques. The student cleans up after him/herself. The work may at times be of superior rating and average at others, but always a consistency of comprehension of design concepts.

C = 79-70: Average. This student shows sound quality in work and participation. The student completes the minimum requirements of the course without showing any improvement of skills. The student cleans up when prompted.

D = 69-60: Below Average. This grade is indicative of lack of genuine commitment. The work of such a student may be incomplete, low test grades, and work showing little evidence of comprehension of design concepts and techniques. Carelessness in work is obvious and very little time or effort has been invested. The student does not clean up or put away tools.

F = 59-0: Failing. Well below the minimum requirements for the course. Little to no evidence of work completed to any acceptable standard.

Make-Up Work: It is the student’s responsibility to make the necessary arrangements to make up work. Excused absences may have up to 5 days to turn in missed work. Make-up work for unexcused absences must be approved by teacher and/or administrator.

Books/Materials: Textbooks will remain in the classroom for the most part. Students may sign out an art textbook, or art media (markers, colored pencils, etc.) and return it by their art class the following day. Tools will not be allowed out of the room.

Student Needs/Medical Alerts: Please contact me if your child requires special needs or if there are any medical issues of which I should be aware.

Students are expected to bring:

  • Art Fee of $20.00 (listed on student pre-payment form -fee schedule).

  • 9”x 12” SPIRAL BOUND sketchbook (A graded assignment).

  • ½”-1” binder with paper (or notebook & folder) to hold notes and handouts.

  • No. 2 pencils, small pencil sharpener and kneaded eraser.

  • Sketchbooks/notebooks should be clearly labeled with student’s name, Art 3H, class period and teacher’s name.

  • 2 stretched canvases- Gallery style if possible; minimum 11x14 to 16x20

Opportunities in Art:

There will be plenty of opportunities for rewards and recognition through local Art exhibits, and our Annual Spring Art Show.. Membership in the National Art Honor Society is urged and available upon maintaining a B average or better in Art (listed on fees schedule-dues $7/Senior Cords $13). The Fine Arts Center and the Governor’s School for the Arts may be considered with a portfolio of work.
