Please look under the Honors Chorus Tab to see the lyrics to the songs we are learning. You may click on the YouTube Clips to gain an idea of how each of the songs should sound. On occasion, I will change up a song to make it a better fit for our group. If you have any questions, please call me at 864-35-5927 during this time 1:45 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. If I do not answer, please leave a message and I will return your call as soon as possible.

3rd - 5th Graders Pre-Test, and Learning To Play The Recorder

The 3rd - 5th grade students will start the year by taking a music pre-test to see what they remember from last year. They will follow that by studying various music symbols, vocabulary, composers, and history. During the 1st and 2nd Nine Weeks, they will learn to play rhythms on the drum, and play melodic lines on the xylophone. They will also see how music relates to the other subjects they are studying.

During the 3rd and 4th Nine Weeks the students will learn to play the Recorder. This is an Orff Instrument. Please click on the link to learn the proper way to play.

Recorder Basics BAG -Recorder Basics

Recorder Basics - https://youtu.be/CkHMfEA4CF8 and https://youtu.be/-d6uVjIEkMY

If your child has their own recorder, they are encouraged to bring it. Otherwise each student will be issued their own recorder so they do not have to share with anyone else. The recorders will not be allowed to go home. If you would like to purchase your child their own recorder so they can practice, please call or go to Pecknel Music, Guitar Center, Music in Arts, or any other music store to purchase one for them. They will continue learning about music symbols, rhythms, styles, vocabulary, and history.

During the course of the year, the students will learn to sing various songs to prepare for our All School Concert, Fine Arts Concert, and other music opportunities.

The students are also learning to play various rhythms on percussion instruments, and singing / listening to various music from around the world using the Kodaly and Solfege.

Solfège is the ABC’s of music. It teaches pitch, to hear and sing harmonies, and how to write down music you create in your head. In other words, Solfège transforms you into the next Mozart or singing diva. Maybe you were introduced to Solfège briefly in a music class or from watching “The Sound of Music,” but let’s talk about what it really is. Solfège describes the musical scale using one-vowel-sound syllables that sing easier than the traditional 8-note scale names: C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C or scale numbers: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-1. The Solfège scale looks like this: Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Ti-Do. Solfège is not only easier to sing, but simplifies music and works with complicated scores as well. For instance, I just described a C-Major scale, but Solfège also describes minor and non-traditional scales, too.

K5 - 3rd Grade Learning To Play and Sing Songs From Around The World The students in the K5-3rd grades are learning to play various rhythms on percussion instruments, and singing / listening to various music from around the world using the Kodaly and Solfege hand signs "low Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La Ti, high Do".

Units of Study For Each Grade Level

In addition to using our Quaver Computer Music Curriculum during the 3rd Nine Weeks, the students will be learning about the Civil Rights Era and how music was such an important part of the movement. We will be listening to Negro Spirituals, Jazz, Country, Blue Grass, Folk Songs, and the Blues. I encourage you to talk to your student about the importance of people being treated Equally and Fairly as well as share your knowledge of the music. They will also be learning about Valentines Day, as well as St. Patrick's Day as we incorporate the music and dances related to these holidays.

The 4th & 5th Grade students will have the opportunity to learn to read music in the treble clef by playing the Recorder, the Xylophone, and the piano. We have enough recorders for the students to use during the school day, and will wash them in the cafeteria to make sure they are clean. If your child has a recorder, I ask that they keep it at home to practice on instead of bringing it to school.

The 3rd Grade students will be introduced to songs related to South Carolina and Patriotic Songs that were popular and are still popular in our state.

The K5, 1st, and 2nd Grade students will be introduced to music, rhythms, and instrument sounds including playing the percussion instruments.

1. THE AIR FORCE SONG – “The U.S. Air Force” (key of Eb)

Off we go into the wild blue yonder, climbing high into the sun;

Here they come zooming to meet our thunder, at ‘em boys, Give them the gun!

Down we dive, spouting our flame from under, off with one terrible roar!

We live in fame or go down in flame; hey! Nothing will stop the U.S. Air Force!

2. THE ARMY’S SONG - “The Caisson” Song (key of Eb)

A.- Verse: First to fight for the right, and to build the Nation’s might,

And The Army Goes Rolling Along, proud of all we have done,

Fighting till the battle’s won, and the Army goes rolling along.

B. Chorus - Then it’s Hi! Hi! Hey! The Army’s on its way.

Count off the cadence loud and strong - TWO! THREE!

For wherever we go, you will always know,

That The Army Goes Rolling Along

3. The NAVY’S SONG “Anchors Aweigh” (key of C)

Anchors aweigh, my boys, anchors aweigh.

Farewell to foreign shores, we sail at break of day, day, day, day.

Through our last night ashore, anchors aweigh,

Until we meet once more. Here’s wishing you a happy voyage home

4. THE COAST GUARD’S SONG – “Semper Paratus” (key of Ab)

We’re always ready for the call; we place our trust in thee.

Through surf and storm and howling gale, high shall our purpose be.

“Semper Paratus” is our guide, our fame, our glory too.

To fight to save or fight to die, Aye! Coast Guard, we are for you!

5. THE MARINES’ SONG – “The Marines’ HYMN (key of F)

From the Halls of Mon-te-zu-ma, to the shores of Tripoli;

We fight our country’s battles, in the air, on land and sea;

First to fight for right and freedom, and to keep our honor clean;

We are proud to claim the title of United States Marine.

4. Chorus - Come on and step into the spotlight; come on and step into the spotlight! Let it shine, shine, shine on our music and our song. Come on and step into the spotlight; come on and step into the spotlight! Let it shine, let it shine for everyone!

A.- The Star Spangled Banner -

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light; What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thru the perilous fight; O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air; Gave proof through the night, that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave; O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

C. Colors of The Wind

1. You think you own whatever land you land on, The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim, But I know every rock and tree and creature, Has a life, has a spirit, has a name

2. You think the only people who are people, Are the people who look and think like you

But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger, You'll learn things you never knew, you never knew

Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned

Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains

Can you paint with all the colors of the wind

Can you paint with all the colors of the wind

D. God Bless America

God bless America, land that I love, stand beside her, and guide her, through the night with a light from above. From the mountains, to the prairies, to the ocean white with foam, God bless America, my home sweet home----. God bless America, my home--- sweet------, home.-----

His truth is marching on.

H.-Carolina In The Morning

Males Only - Strolling with my girlie where the dew is pearly early in the morning.

Females Only - Butterflies all flutter up and kiss each little buttercup at dawning,

All Sing - If I had Aladdin's lamp for only a day, I'd make a wish and here's what I'd say: Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina in the morning.

I.-This Land Is Your Land
