5. The 4th & 5th grade students will start the year by taking a music pre-test to see what they remember from last year. They will follow that by studying various music symbols, vocabulary, composers, and history. During the 1st and 2nd Nine Weeks, they will learn to play rhythms on the drum, and play melodic lines on the xylophone and the piano / electric keyboard. They will also see how music relates to the other subjects they are studying.
As we finish up the year, I will talk to my students about writing song lyrics. These students from Ms. Batson's 4th Grade Class created the following song in May 2017. The only thing the teacher did was record it.

The Corvid-19 Coronavirus is real. Even with this virus, just know that I care. The song "Lean On Me" by the late Bill Withers is fitting for this time in our school life. To my 5th grade students, please know that I wish you the very best for the remainder of this school year and the start of your 6th grade in whatever middle school you are assigned to attend. Make it your best year yet! https://youtu.be/rdlPVBvkr-s
