Course Description:
This course continues the study of Modern Jazz melody, comping and improvisation in a small group setting. Carefully graded material is introduced to the students so that they learn how to analyze, and play a song without supervision. Transcribing material from recordings is introduced in the second semester.
Course Goals and Outcomes:
The students will learn to play melody, harmony and improvisations from the music of The Great American Songbook, the Blues, along with Bossa Nova and Samba styles. The outcomes will be measured with in class tests and performances as well as public recitals at The Fine Arts Center.

Manuscript/staff paper
Spotify or Apple Music app
iRealPro app
Metronome or Metronome app
Amazing Slowdowner (2nd semester)
Headphones (noise-canceling preferred) or earbuds with connectivity to smartphone
Classroom Expectations:
The students will bring their instruments to class each day. Storage is available for large instruments. Wade Hampton students may leave their instruments at The Fine Arts Center and pick them up after school. Guitarists and electric bassists must bring their own instrument cable. Amplifiers will be provided.
Practice:
Students are required to practice their instrument for a minimum of 40 minutes a day, 5 days a week and maintain a practice log.
Grading Policies:
Grades will be measured during class playing tests after each unit.
90-100 A, 80-90 B, 70-80 C, 60-70 D- 50 or lower F.
Final course grade:
Semester 1: Quarter 1 = 45%, Quarter 2 = 45%, Exam = 10%
Semester 2: Quarter 3 = 45%, Quarter 4 = 45%, Exam = 10%
Late Work
• Student attended class and failed to submit a required assignment on time
• Student has an unexcused absence as coded in PowerSchool
Major Grades: In Class Accepted up to 3 days late, 15-point deduction per day
Grade will become and remain a zero (0) after 3 days.
Minor Grades:
Homework/Practice Logs Accepted up to 1 day late, 15-point deduction per day
Grade will become and remain a zero (0) after 1 day.
Make-up Work
Students who miss classwork or tests due to illness or suspension must have the opportunity to make up the work. Students will request make-up work through the teacher. Instructors should respond within 24 hours to ensure that assignments are completed in a timely manner. Students have five school days to make up any work that was missed regardless of the reason for absence. Extended illness should be handled on an individual basis with the student’s illness and workload in mind.

Course Description:
This course continues the study of Modern Jazz melody, comping and improvisation in a small group setting. Each student is placed in a combo that works together for 9 weeks. They are allowed to choose material from jazz literature from the dates 1955-present. Each student learns their part from a recording. Transcribing recorded music is covered in the 3rd 9 weeks. Fusion is covered in the 4th 9 weeks.
