Music

Elementary music

All Kindergarten - 5th grade students attend music class one time per week for 45 minutes.  In class students are immersed in developing sequential skills that build over time.  Instruction focuses on developing aural, singing, and music literacy skills.  Over time students develop an appreciation for music of varying styles and from different cultures.  They learn how to sing, play instruments and connect music with movement. Students demonstrate their understanding by engaging in hands-on activities that involve creating, performing, listening/responding and connecting music to other subjects, life events, and cultures.

Each year outstanding fourth and fifth grade music students from across the state join together to form the South Carolina Elementary Honor Choir (SCEHC.) Selection of members is based on auditions. Schools are limited to submitting six recorded student auditions. Classroom music teachers will distribute detailed audition information to students, schedule auditions and conduct rehearsals at their school for students accepted into SCEHC.   Student accepted into SCEHC from across the state will meet and rehearse together in February during the South Carolina Music Educators Association Conference in Columbia.
