Welcome Back!!!

The 2020-21 School Year may look a little different, but I am looking forward to a new year and seeing everyone's faces and smiles (even with the masks on).

Thank you to all my wonderful students in the spring who--despite the quick change to learning at home--created some of the best artwork I have ever seen! Below is a little gallery to show off their hard work:

The Beck Visual Art Department was so fortunate this past December to have a SmartARTS Printmaking Unit with Teaching Artist Sunny Mullarkey Studio !!!

We created gelli prints with carved relief stamps inspired by the art of Eduardo Bolioli and his “My Surreal Hawaiian Life” series. Each student then wrote an original haiku poem to put on their final artwork. All prints will be hung up on the main hall for the month of January.

The Beck Visual Art Department would like to say a special thank you to SmartARTS, The Metropolitan Arts Council, and Beck Academy Middle for their consistent and constant support of our program.

Arts Integration: SmartARTS Theater Unit with Prentiss Standridge

For the month of March, my art classes have been studying the art of mask-making with an arts integrated unit with local actor, Prentiss Standridge. This amazing unit started with learning about the history of masks with emphasis on Commedia dell'Arte masks from the Italian Renaissance followed by practicing Actor Skills and Tools with active learning games and Neutral Mask Tableaus.

The ending artworks were Mask Portraits where students wore their mask and posed to create a character that evoked a mood or emotion.

This semester (like last semester) ROCKED it, and I am so very proud of them!

A GIANT THANK YOU to Metropolitan Arts Council and Beck Academy Middlefor your constant support with our Visual Arts Department!

Thank you, Prentiss Standridge, for your AMAZING lessons to help us get to this point.

Congratulations to 8th grader Madison Roberts on her 2nd Place award in the Western Region’s Youth Art Month Exhibition through the South Carolina Art Educators Association! Her work will now be on exhibition with other region winners to compete for the State Youth Art Month Exhibition in Columbia.

Madison’s Picasso Felting was completed during the SmartARTS Fiber Arts Unit with Cecilia Ho in Miss Steller’s class.

Dancing Penguins with our Adaptive Art Class!

The Visual Arts Department was so incredibly lucky to have a second SmartARTS Artist-Teacher with them this fall semester. Cecilia Ho is a local artist who specializes in Fiber Arts. She worked with Miss Steller's classes for 8 days where students learned: how to turn natural sheep wool into Wool Felt as Decorative and Functional Objects with the Wet Felting and Needle Felting Techniques plus some basic Sewing and Stitching Skills. We discussed different types of “Movement” terms, shared ideas, background, history, experimented fiber arts technique, and learned so much about Wool, Felt, and Felting.

We are so proud of all our students who did "FELTastic" on their creative Fiber Art projects based on 4 chosen artists: Heather Brown (6th) ; Vincent Van Gogh (7th) ; Pablo Picasso (8th) ; Wassily Kandinsky (Adaptive Art). They did an AMAZING job!

Thank you to SmartARTS and the Metropolitan Arts Council for sponsoring such one-of-a-kind Arts opportunities for students in Greenville County Schools.

We are so excited to have Cecilia Ho with us for Beck's very first Felting Unit! With the support of SmartARTS and the Metropolitan Arts Council, the Beck Art Department is having our second SmartARTS artist-teacher with us for this semester. Ms. Ho is a fiber artist who specializes in felting. So far, she has taught students about both needle-felting and wet-felting!

Art Club December Meeting!

On Monday, the Beck Art Department was so incredibly lucky to have Béatrice Coron come and speak to my last two classes and “special edition” veteran Art Club students!

Ms. Coron is such an inspiration and such an awesome human! She was open to my classroom, fluid in her lessons, and so thoughtful in her presentations and teachings. Students created their own paper-cuts and were able to take goodie-bags of extra supplies to continue their works at home!

A HUGE thank you to Donna Shank-Major from the Fine Arts Center and Greenville County Schools’ ABC grants for making this opportunity available and possible!

A BIG "Thank You!" to the Barnes&Nobles in the Shops of Greenridge for supporting Beck International Academy in their spring book fair and for letting us display our "We are Beck: Fine Art Portraits."

“We are Beck: Fine Art Portraits”

Beck International Academy is proud to announce its spring exhibition “We are Beck: Fine Art Portraits” created during the Metropolitan Art Council’s SmartARTS unit with guest photographer Polly Gaillard. Photographs were taken by students in both Carlon Steller’s fall and spring art classes.

“This year’s SmartARTS unit has been an amazing experience for my students and school. Students learned how to turn a picture of a classmate into a work of art through the instruction of Polly Gaillard teaching the compositional strengths of a fine art portrait. Students excelled at using their devices to create beautiful and thoughtful portraits of their peers. The professional-looking portraits that were displayed in the fall are still the talk of the school. I am looking forward to everyone’s reaction to this show and our upcoming Annual Beck Art Show!” –Carlon Steller, Art Teacher

What makes a Fine Art Portrait?

Fine Art Photography differs from the everyday “snapshot” because of its thoughtful composition. The subjects are typically placed in a calm or non-distracting background to where the photographer can focus on capturing the person and not just a moment. Our SmartARTS guest photographer, Polly Gaillard, taught our art classes how to take a portrait worthy of a gallery setting. Each portrait was taken by a fellow student following Ms. Gaillard’s instructions with some taken by the artist herself!

Thoughtful questions:

What do you notice most about these photographs?

Is there one you particularly like? Why?

The Beck Academy Art Department continued its tradition again this year by participating in the Festival of Trees at the Downtown Hyatt with their tree, "Mondrian's Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." The tree is inspired by the Minimalist artist Piet Mondrian. You can stop by the Hyatt to view all the trees.
