Adaptive Art

Adaptive Art is an art class in its roots, but it so much more! We are a class that consists of students with special needs and students from regular ed classes that participate in a collaborative buddy system. Please note that our art curriculum still follows the National Standards for Visual Arts as well as the South Carolina State Standards with our learning of art techniques, Art History, and concept. It is with visual arts that the class becomes a place to learn how to work with different types of people and learn how to accommodate and best help each other. Our projects are multilayered in order for no matter what level the student is at, they can succeed. Students are paired with a “buddy” and from there work together to complete each given assignment. We will rotate buddies throughout the semester in order for the class to truly grow and get to know each other.

I encourage you to talk with your student and have them share about the relationships they are making and the projects we are working on. The more students strengthen these relationships with their buddies, the bigger the benefit for them in the class and as a school community member.
