Grading Policy

2025-2026


Language Arts 


Minimum number of grades-3 Minor/ 2 Major 


Minor Grades will make 60% of the grade and will consist of response journals, Learning Logs, Writer’s Craft, Writing Conventions, Writing Process, Writing Rubrics, Research Projects, Reference Materials, Use of Technology, Presentation Rubrics, Writing Prompts, Constructed Responses, Anecdotal Records, Observation Checklist, etc.   ELA Journals will serve as study guides.


Major Grades will make 30% of the grades and will consist of one Writing Portfolio and one Major Test 


Spelling will make 10% of the grade and will consist of at least 5 grades. 






Reading 


Minimum number of grades-5 Minor/ 2 Major 


Minor Grades will make 60% of the grade and will consist of comprehension strategies and skills, retelling protocols, responses to literature, observations, checklist, name test, portfolio, HM theme skills test, etc. 


Major Grades will make 40% of the grades and will consist of selection assessment and novel/chapter book test, 20% integrated theme skills test, 20% 






Math -  We will have a weekly test on adding/ subtraction or multiplication/division facts. Students will have chapter review test, chapter test and unit test. Students will know at least a week in advance when to expect a chapter or unit test.  Math journals will serve as study guides.


Math 


Minimum number of grades-7 Minor/ 2 Major 


Minor Grades will make 60% of the grade and will consist of daily activities/ assignments including subject-specific content knowledge, process skills including communication, and/or effort: quizzes, writing assignments, observation, checklist, extending/refining assignments, presentations, and performance assessments 


Major Grades will make 40% of the grades and will consist of major test, culminating projects, performance assessments, and portfolios: grades should be based on subject-specific content knowledge, process skills including problem solving and communication. 




Science and Social Studies - Students will be given a reading assignment, for the week as homework. They will be some type of an assessment for each lesson. It may be a teacher made test/ a district common assessment or a workbook page. We will have a test at the end of each unit. Students will know at least a week before we have a unit test.  




Science 


Minimum number of grades-5 Minor/ 2 Major 


Minor Grades will make 60% of the grade and will consist of daily activities/assignments including subject specific content knowledge, process skills including communication, and/or effort: quizzes, science lab participation, science lab/ class journals entries, writing assignments, observation, checklist, extending/refining assignments, presentations, performance assessments. 


Major Grades will make 40% of the grades and will consist of major test, culminating projects, performance assessments, portfolio, and science fair projects: grades should be based on subject-specific content knowledge, process skills including problem solving and communication. 




Social Studies 


Minimum number of grades-5 Minor/ 2 Major 


Minor Grades will make 60% of the grade and will consist of activities/assignments including quizzes writing assignments, observation, checklist, extending/refining assignments, subject specific content knowledge, thinking/reasoning skills, and communication skills, effort 


Major Grades will make 40% of the grades and will consist of major test, culminating projects and performance: grades may be based on subject-specific content knowledge, thinking reasoning/ skills, communication skills 




Penmanship will be evaluated with the following descriptors: 


M- Meets Standards 


P- Progressing towards standards 




Schedule of Major Assessments: 


Spelling Test will be given each Thursday. 


Reading Theme test will be given at the end of each unit of study. 


Math test will be given each week and at the end of each chapter. 


We are currently alternating between Social Studies and Science.  We will not be using a Social Studies textbook this year. Instead, we will be using digital resources.


Quizzes for all subject areas will be given when necessary to assess mastery. 




Other forms of assessment will include: 


Daily work 


Oral discussion 


Teacher observations 


Projects- to include computer projects, students created displays, or reports. 

Computer based assessments, such as Mastery Connect.




Students Records 


Grades will be recorded in my grade book and on the computer. 


The teacher will keep an individual file on each student that will contain all graded papers and assessments.
