Welcome to the 2023-2024 School Year! I'm very glad to have you in my classroom!
GREENVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL ACADEMIC GUIDE
A copy of the GMS Academic Guide is available in the counselor's office and on the GISD website. In part, as it pertains to Pre-AP (Pre-Advanced Placement) courses, it states that Pre-AP courses are designed to challenge motivated students and to prepare them for success in future college-level coursework. It further notes that these courses typically move in a faster pace, are more academically challenging, and require more independent learning and homework than other academic courses. It also states that a student who does not maintain at least a C (70%) average for the first grading period will be placed on probation, and a student who has an F (less than 60%) average at the end of the grading period will be removed from the class (unless otherwise recommended by the teacher).
Other expectations for students in Pre-AP classes includes the following:
... to exhibit self-discipline.
... to establish a personal time-management system.
... to know multiplication facts, perform long division, and exhibit effective problem solving skills.
... to complete homework and make-up work.
... to have mastery skills at or above the 6th grade level.
... to receive between three and four hours of homework each week. However, please note that Dr. Mahrer does not assign that much homework. His learning philosophy is, if you can demonstrate proficiency with ten or less problems, why assign twenty problems?
The guide also outlines all courses, required and elective, offered at the Greenville Middle School.
