As community educational and engagement hubs, libraries are uniquely positioned to understand and address sustainability challenges. Many libraries have committed to taking steps to increase the environmental, economic, and social sustainability aspects of their organizations under the leadership of the American Library Association. Libraries can help to equip the community by providing information and educational resources on climate change, hosting events and workshops, and serving a collaborative gathering space for interested individuals to share ideas.
The libary provides resources, tools, and opportunities that can help create a more equitable world, and must be accessible to all regardless of race, gender, religion, socioeconomic status and other differences. In addition, inviting in people with diverse perspective provide rich resources for learning and collaboration.
Another compoment of this focus area is coordination. Coordination and planning helps an institution organize, implement and publicize sustainability initiatives. These efforts provide the infrastructure that fosters sustainability within an institution. Sustainability coordination and planning and participatory governance affords an institution the opportunity to clarify its vision of a sustainable future, establish priorities and help guide budgeting and decision making.
