The main takeaways of the library's GHG emission in from the baseline assessment:
The library has met their goal of 25% reduction by 2020, compared to the 2008 baseline of 262 MTCO2e.
Only scope 1 and 2 emission are currently tracked by the Corporation through the town's data (emissions from electricity, heating, and cooling of the buildings and the emissions from the car that the library uses).
The library can become GHG neutral in its scope 1 and 2 emissions by eliminating natural gas for heating and utilizing renewable energy for electricity by 2050.
The below the slide show covers the following topics of the GHG emissions of the library:
The library's goal for 2050 is to emit 52 MTCO2e or less.
In 2020, Main Branch emitted 143 MTC02e and the Fowler Branch emitted 58 MTCO2e.
From July 1 2015 to June 30, 2016, the library emitted 250 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2e) from its buildings operation and fleet of the library. This is equivalent to 2% of the Town of Concord's municipal operations' emissions in 2016 (12,000 tons of MTCO2e).
The library will be relying on the Concord Municipal Light Plant to achieve 100% renewable electricity before 2050 in order to meet the goal of 80% emissions reduction by 2050.
The Main Branch has a larger footprint than the Fowler Branch, largely due to the size of the building. If Concord Free Public Library focuses on reducing both branches to their goal of 80% emissions reduction, the resulting emissions would be approximately 39 MTCO2e and 14 MTCO2e respectively. Alternatively, the branches could reach beyond that goal by switching to electric-based heating and cooling systems - similar to the system that is being installed in the Main Library renovation and addition project.
