What’s happening in MBLC schools?
The MBLC includes many different kinds of schools - from elementary schools to high schools, from large comprehensive public schools to small alternative programs, from schools in remote villages to schools in the heart of Seattle and Vancouver.
Each MBLC school has chosen elements of culturally responsive-sustaining mastery-based learning to focus on:
Some schools have worked with students and families to craft lists of transferable skills - often called Shared Outcomes, Portrait of a Graduate, or Competencies - that students work on in every class along with subject-area standards. Here is the list of shared outcomes from Summit Virtual Academy in North Thurston WA.
Some schools have worked on shifting their schedules to provide more targeted support to help students achieve mastery and build their confidence and skills. At Innovation Heights Academy in Burien, the schedule was re-designed to include Re-engagement Fridays, a day dedicated to re-teaching, practice, and re-assessment, and a wellness block every day to help students build healthy habits.
Some schools are building student agency and encouraging students to set goals, monitor their own progress, and reflect on their work using criteria. In this video, students at Bush Middle School in Tumwater explain their Student Led Conferences.
Some schools have created Badge Books to enable elementary school students and parents to track student learning of essential skills and knowledge. Here are Badge Books from Elma Elementary School in Elma, WA.
Some schools have crafted new processes for creating culturally responsive-sustaining and mastery-based units and projects. Here is an example from Summit Virtual Academy.
