In this article, Kenlee discusses how women's fashion has evolved throughout history.
Young women’s fashions have evolved throughout the past century in the United States. Fashions have been influenced by trends and both social and political factors. In the 1920s, women gained the right to vote through the 19th Amendment and, as a result of their newfound liberties, women’s fashions changed dramatically.
Prior to the 1920s, women were expected to dress modestly. According to Fashion History Timeline (an online source that is about timelines of fashion), women wore tight corsets and full-length dresses that covered their bodies from the neck to the floor. They also sported petticoats underneath their dresses that were lined with lace. Evening wear consisted of a full-length dress with shorter sleeves and long gloves. Approaching the 1920s, women started to express themselves through their clothing by wearing simpler styles that rose to popularity after World War 1 and the 19th Amendment. Plain frocks were worn during the day, which were composed of flowy material and a dropped waist, and every young woman had her hair sheared into a “bob” – usually topped with a cloche hat. This era not only represented simpler styles but also a more active and free lifestyle as “flappers" – women who danced at night clubs. Their style was contrasting to the simple, normal day wear. Flapper dresses were flashy, in vivid colors embellished with glass beads, fringe, and sequins that would shake to the jazz music.
Modern-day women’s fashion trends are more casual than the 1900-1930 era. Over time, fashions have evolved. Women now pick daily comfort over tight corsets and uncomfortable dresses of past years. As explained by Vogue Magazine, wide-legged jeans are favored [and have come back in style again] and oversized hoodies paired with sweatpants. Designers also point out that animal prints are coming back in fashion; for example, leopard skin crop tops and jeans are appearing on high school and college campuses now. Vogue also mentions that the 2024 Olympic Games have influenced young women to dress in athletic wear like popular athletic brands and jerseys. One trend that has definitely stood the test of time would be the “Little Black Dress.” As stated by As If Magazine (an online source that provides artistic articles) a little black dress is a necessity and “Fashion historians have attributed the origins of the Little Black Dress to the 1920s designs of Coco Chanel and Jean Patou."
Fashion trends are fluid, ever-changing, and a melting pot of ideas. We take trends from the past and put a modern-day spin on them that suits our daily lives in the 2020s. Many of today's fashions are a marriage of the past and the present: we will keep recycling ideas and adapting them to new and exciting designs.
