In this article, Melanie talks about the fall choir concert and it's Halloween themed music.
The Grants Pass High School Performing Arts Center has been hosting beautiful fall concerts for its choirs for many years, and this year is no different. On Oct. 24, the GPHS choir presented a concert titled “Double Double, Toil and Treble.” They performed songs such as "Pure Imagination," "Monster Mash," "Double Trouble," and "Harvest Moon." The choir is known for its strong and well-led singing. Over the past two years, the ensembles have been guided by our new choir teacher, Ms. Pulsipher. Ms. Pulsipher is an energetic and fun teacher who has brought a fresh perspective to the Grants Pass choir program. Seventeen-year-old GPHS senior Melodaires student Skye Alder, when asked if she felt Ms. Pulsipher had done a good job preparing them for the concert, said, “Yes, definitely.”
The Grants Pass High School choir consists of five different ensembles. The beginning-level combined choir is the Contemporary Choir. Even though it is a beginner choir, students are still held to a high standard and perform well each time. The intermediate women’s choir is Melodaires, where developing performers learn various vocal techniques. The men’s intermediate choir is the Tenor/Bass ensemble, which also focuses on technique and continuous improvement. The upper-level combined choir is the Concert Choir, composed of fine-tuned and experienced musicians who demonstrate complex and advanced musicianship, inspiring the beginning choirs. The last and highest combined choir is Sounds Unlimited, featuring singers hand-selected by Ms. Pulsipher, performing eclectic music at a higher level.
This year’s fall concert had a Halloween theme. The music was selected to capture the spirit of the spooky season, with a wardrobe to match. All the choirs wore Halloween costumes. Specific Halloween props complemented the music, including lightsabers for Sounds Unlimited. The concert lasted around an hour, with each choir singing two to four songs, and all of the choirs opening the concert with “Pure Imagination.”
The choirs were more than ready for this performance. They have been working on their vocal technique during warm-ups and began memorizing their first song at the start of the school year. This level of preparation is known to pay off. Seventeen-year-old GPHS senior Paul Beckstead, a member of Sounds Unlimited, stated that they have been preparing since August, before school began. This highlights the dedication of the choirs and, subsequently, the quality of their music. When asked if he felt fully prepared for the concert, he said, “Better than I’ve ever been.” He added, “It’s gonna be a great concert.”
The “Double Double, Toil and Treble” concert was a thoughtfully planned and well-prepared event. All of the choirs gave their best in this performance, held in the Performing Arts Center auditorium at 7:00 PM. The concert was free and attracted many attendees. Both the vocalists and the audience were excited, and the audience was left more than satisfied with the astounding vocal performances. This reflects the hard work and planning behind the Grants Pass High School fall choir concert.
