In this article, Mia Reese will be discussing the many aesthetics of this year influenced by Tik Tok.
The dark academia aesthetic is a perfect example that aesthetics are far more than personal style but can be a lifestyle. This aesthetic emphasizes a taste for knowledge, being engrossed by literature and visually-pleasing scenes, like studying in an old library. In Scottie Andrew’s article for CNN, one of his sources, a Tik Toker named Glowacz, says, "It's portrayed generally as a sort of secretive, individual and an intense thirst for knowledge which is what makes it moody and 'dark' academia." The aesthetic also provides space on Tik Tok where individuals can proudly post about studying for hours on end or reading and get commemorated.
The dark academia fashion style is quite stunning. The style leans towards the preppier side while incorporating darker-toned colors. Considering that layering is an important aspect of the style, the downside of the aesthetic is that it is not ideal for warm summer days. It is most suitable for the fall or winter days. Some of the most common pieces worn are sweaters, plaid skirts or pants, and turtleneck tops. Outfits are mainly paired with bookbags, glasses and belts.

The clean girl aesthetic is one of the many (current) Tik Tok obsessions. The basic idea is to appear put-together while simultaneously giving off the impression you did nothing to achieve that look. What makes this aesthetic interesting is that it does not only pertain to style, but it also determines everything–from the clean girl’s makeup to their hairstyle. Since the key objective of the aesthetic is to give off the impression that you did not try, makeup is used to accentuate natural features and achieve a glowy look. Some popular products featured in clean girl routines are the Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter complexion booster, the DIOR Addict Lip Glow Oil and the Glossier Boy Brow.
As for the hair, in an article for My Imperfect Life, Naomi Jamieson shares, “The go-to hair look for said ‘clean girls’ appears to be very similar to the Bella Hadid bun—which is basically a slicked-back bun, with no hair left out of place.” A majority of these girls also seem to have curtain bangs or framing pieces that are left out during their updo hairstyles. All of their aspects seem perfect, right down to their fashion sense. Their style consists of pieces that complement their body and the color scheme is quite neutral. Additionally, their outfits are always accompanied by elegant gold jewelry, like small hoop earrings.

The term coquette is defined as a “flirtatious woman,” so the Coquette aesthetic’s main idea is embracing your femininity. The aesthetic is more complex than how you dress though it also can transform your actions. Tik Toker Nia touches on in an article for NYLON when she says, “I would say coquette is more focused on the fashion choice, but also the way you act and your personality. Your vocabulary changes, for example, using the words “darling” or “exquisite.’”
The fashion style is supposed to come off as cute and generally includes light colors such as white and baby pink. Popular clothing pieces that can be incorporated into any coquette outfit include lace tops, frilly socks, sundresses and skirts. As for shoes, chunky heels are the way to go. Arguably, though, the most important element of a completed coquette look are accessories. Wearing pearls, a dainty gold necklace, or some heart-shaped earrings would especially nail the aesthetic.
