With this page, Daisie will be discussing some of the good things that are going on right now throughout the world.
A lot of news outlets nowadays focus on primarily negative topics. It is hard to find any positive stories from any well-known media. This column will be here every month to highlight a collection of "Good News" stories one may have missed.
BEE-RETIREMENT HOME!
Unbeknownst to a lot of people, bees are endangered. But in a hope to prevent these busy pollinators' population from declining even more, a flower delivery business entitled Flying Flowers (based in the UK), has created a so-called “bee-tirement” home. Throughout the miniature resort are comforts such as tiny chairs for the bees to relax in, a sugar water fountain, and pollen-filled flowers. Numerous studies have shown that certain bee species, such as the American Bumblebee or the Bombus Bohemicus, are really having to fight to stay alive.
The owner of Flying Flowers has definitely been staying up to date with the bees’ issues, because no bees = no flowers. In hopes of capturing the attention of the nation, the ‘Honeysuckle Bee-tirement Home’ came to be(e). Since most are not going to the UK anytime soon, the company released some actions others can take to support the bees in their own communities. Those who are able could create their own bee hotel or do some research on creating a “bee bath,” though something as small as planting pollen-rich flowers and refraining from using pesticides can help, too!
CALIFORNIA BANS UNNECESSARY TESTING ON ANIMALS
Pets are not only adorable but they bring support to a lot of people, whether it be through pure comfort or genuine medical attention. Those are the reasons why Governor Gavin Newsom (California) banned unnecessary chemical testing on dogs and cats. Newsom says, “I’m proud to sign this legislation to advance our state’s leadership on animal welfare by ending cruel and unnecessary testing on dogs and cats.”
For years, animals have been used for tests on different products, like chemicals, experimental substances, and more. The Humane Society of the US wrote an explanation of animal testing, describing the trials the science labs put them through. Some of these are serious surgeries on spinal cords and implants of various devices. California is now the first state to implement any protections over the animals kept in these labs. Numerous pets are going to be released and sent to good homes, this being a huge win for the state.
SPACE-X CREW LANDS HOME
A Space-X crew has come back to Earth after staying in a laboratory for six months. NASA had sent three astronauts of their own whilst the ESA (European Space Agency) had sent one. Kjell Lindgren, Bob Hines, and Jessica Watkins are the three Americans, Samantha Cristoforetti being a researcher from Italy. On this trip up into the great unknown, Watkins became the first Black woman to join the international space station for an extended stay. Whilst up on this station, the four completed a number of experiments, one of which was how to grow vegetables and other plants in space without soil. That test was successful. Watkins tells reporters, “It’s been awesome to be able to walk into the Columbus module and smell the smell of leaves growing, of plants growing.”
The work that these scientists have done and the lengths that they have gone to will not have gone to waste. The up and coming Artemis mission from NASA will use their research in order to go further into space than ever before. The ESA and NASA are excited about the data the astronauts picked up but one could be sure that, after six months away, their families are grateful that they are back.
Overall, this month has yet again been positively filled. Like last month, hopefully, this article can help to find even the smallest of good things that are going on in the world. Whether it may be about outer space or great climate wins, it will be here in this column.
