Married Couple Save Babies from Burning Nursery

The year of 2020 stopped many newlyweds from going on their honeymoons due to the rise of the pandemic. This is exactly what happened to David Squillante and Doran Smith in the fall of 2020. Missing out on their honeymoon, the married couple decided to take a trip to Spain as their official honeymoon in Oct. of 2022.

Not long into their trip on Oct. 12, the couple decided to take a walk to the nearby park. As they were walking, they heard a commotion coming from a nearby building. According to TODAY News, the couple saw women running out into the street. Smith stated, “I saw a flame coming out of the doorway next to the door that these women had come out of.” Squillante and Smith did not wait to think before they ran into the burning building, not realizing it was a nursery.
When they entered the building, they were surprised by the sight of 15-20 sleeping babies within the nursery. No one in the nursery spoke English. Thinking quickly, they grabbed the babies and put them in cribs. Everyone lined up to carry the cribs across the street to the nearby high school lobby for safety. The situation lasted about 10 minutes and all of the babies were left unharmed. Once everyone was clear of the building, a Fire Crew arrived to conclude that the fire had been started due to electrical issues.

After making sure everyone was safe and out of the building, the couple went back to their walk to continue their way to the park. To Squillante and Smith, they were just a couple on their honeymoon. To the nursery workers and the babies, they were heroes. According to a FireHouse article, Squillante stated, “It doesn’t feel real at all. Every time I tell the story, I’m like, 'Did that really happen?'" After that day, the married couple have been labeled as heroic and are considered an example of humility and bravery.
