In this article, Fallon talks about the 2025 annual Sanrio Voting Event.
The beloved annual Sanrio Character Ranking has officially returned for the 40th year, inviting Sanrio fans all around the world to cast their votes for their favorite Sanrio characters. This year's theme is “Jump into the Future with You!”, celebrating not only the enduring charm of Sanio’s universe as a whole but also the deep emotional connections many fans have formed with these sweet characters over the decades.
Running from Apr. 10 to May 25, 2025, the voting period allows participants to support their favorite characters online– either through the official Sanrio Character Ranking website or the popular mobile app Hello Sweet Days. The final results will be announced on June 29 during Sanrio FES 2025 in Yokohama, Japan. Each year, the ranking event ignites a playful but passionate competition among fans, with top characters often becoming the face of future Sanrio merchandise, events, and collaborations. In 2024, Cinnamoroll dominated the leaderboard with his fifth win in a row, reaffirming his place as a global favorite. Given his consistent wins, many fans are becoming a bit irritated by Cinnamoroll’s constant victories– which has brewed up sort of a revolution across social media platforms. Many individuals are fighting to bring Cinnamoroll down from his first-place spot– promoting different characters. This year, there has been quite a lot of Chococat “propaganda” of sorts across the web.
The Sanrio Character Ranking first launched in 1986, with a modest lineup of only 26 characters and has since expanded to include over 80 characters to its main voting roster. The campaign reflects not only the character's popularity but also broader cultural trends. Fan engagement often influences shifts in aesthetic preferences, fashion, and emotional expression-- whether it is the retro revival of characters like Tuxedosam or the growing occult popularity with newer additions like Cogimyn. Some voters even try to be different by voting for candidates like Marshmallowmitainafuwafuwanyanko– or Kiramichan, who is just … a piece of salmon. Beyond the fun, the ranking has become a symbol of community. Fans from across continents come together to celebrate their favorite characters through various art pieces and campaigns. Sanrio embraces this spirit by offering worldwide access and holding global promotion events leading up to the grand finale. According to Jill Koch, Senior Vice President of Brand Management and Marketing of the company, the event “is a true testament to the enduring love for our characters and the vibrant community that supports them. The Character Ranking is more than just a contest; it’s a celebration of the beloved characters that have brought joy and inspiration to people around the world. We are excited to see which characters will rise to the top this year and for fans to discover new Sanrio friends they can identify with.”
