Sweater Weather is here, just like the song “Sweater Weather” by The Neighborhood. The Neighborhood is an alternative indie rock band which formed in 2011, according to The Neighborhood fandom website. The band consists of lead singer Jesse Rutherford, guitarist Jeremy Freedman and Zach Ables, bassist Mikey Margott and drummer Brandon Fried. However, there were sexual assault allegations made against Brandon Fried, so the band has been on hiatus.
The band’s song “Sweater Weather” became one of their most popular songs. According to Variety Magazine, it became popular in June of 2013. The song was on their I Love You album. The music video was released in 2012 but then got labeled as “unlisted” on YouTube. It then came back in 2013 with a black and white overlay to match their theme/album. Here’s a fun fact: “Sweater Weather” was their very first song.
Some may be wondering about the background behind “Sweater Weather”. According to the members of the band (Zach and Jesse), Ables said, "One day Jesse was at my house and I was playing guitar. And he said, 'Hey that's pretty cool, let me record that.' And it just so happened to be ‘Sweater Weather’. When we got done writing the song, when it was all said and done we were like 'Okay this is pretty good we should keep writing songs.'" Rutherford added, “I think ‘Sweater Weather’ might've been the best song we’d ever write”.
The band made a strong statement on their Instagram about Brandon Fried. In an article by NY Post, Fried was stated to have groped a member of another band named The Marias, Maria Zardoya. Zardoya said, “I was at a bar last night, and I was groped under the table by Brandon Fried, the drummer of The Neighbourhood. It was one of the most uncomfortable things I’ve ever experienced. I felt an invasion of my space, privacy and body,” and said that they needed a new drummer. The Neighborhood made a statement on their Instagram story, saying, “We are grateful to Maria for coming forward. We have zero tolerance for any kind of inappropriate behavior towards women. As a result of Brandon’s actions, he will no longer be a member of The Neighbourhood.” Fried took accountability for his actions, apologizing to the singer in a statement on Instagram.
The Neighborhood is a beloved band. The hope is that they’d be able to overcome everything that’s been going on and continue to do music in the near future.
